Unhappy Help my new 964 has engine trouble, I am out of town.

I just pick up my new 1994 911 C2, this past thursday night.
My wife and I had to go to the coast this weekend for a baby shower.
So I decided to take my new car.
The trip was nice my wife really liked the seats, better even then her 2006 Audi.
Any way the trip is about 360 miles from Atlanta to the Gulf Coast.

About the last third of the trip(200 miles) I thought I hear a ticking from the back rear of the engine. It seem to sound like a valve tick.

When we got off the interstate the noise was louder, and really like a valve noise, with a erectic slap or rap every once in a while.

The car never got hot, and the oil pressure was always good. The engine has 97k.
The avg speed of the trip was about 88 miles a hour.
So I changed the oil and put a new oil filter in just in chase it was bad oil .

No luck, there is still a loud valve noise with the a slap ever once in a while.

Please let me know what ya'll think, I have to drive back to Atlanta monday morning. I talked to the guy that sold it to me, (big Porsche Guy), he said that he thought I could drive it back to Atlanta safely.

i am just sick right now, Can it just be the valves out of adjustment?
Can I drive back , there are no real Porsche shops on the Gulf coast?

If you thinks somethings wrong do not drive it , it will not get better.

send in an oil sample , see if it comes up with anything .

Purchase a larger screw driver and try listening to the valves.
Maybe you can isolate the noise.
You might get a better idea what you're up against.

Dfinnegan. do you just put the screw driver on the valve covers, when the engine is @ idle?
If it is just a valve, or valves, can you still drive it?
I talked to a friend that is handy with Porsches, and he think it could be the valves need adjustment, and it was driveable , does that sound right.

Just a tick, perhaps. But an intermittant slap? I doubt that.

I know it's a major pain but I'd park it until I can get it into a competant shop (or arrange to get it flatbedded/shipped back - $500 for shipping is less expensiv than a head and pair of valves if something is going wonky).

Sure.. could be something simple but if it's something complex the expense just keeps going higher the more you drive it.

Sorry to hear that man.. that really, really stinks...

Sorry you are having trouble... really bad timing.

It is not likely that a valve needing to be adjusted would get noisy quickly. It is possible, but not likely.

As others have said, it is risky to drive it. If it is something serious and you drive it, there is a good chance it will break completely on your way home and cost you much more in the end.
No easy way out of this. Your best bet is to figure out what this is before driving home.
Hard to help more from here since we can't hear it.

Does the sound follow the engine RPM exactly? Or is it erratic? If it is a bit random, it could be an exhaust connection come loose. If it tracks engine revs then it will be something mechanical in the valve train or worse...

It follows the engine RPM exactly, with a slap every once in a while. This is a loud tick the other people can hear if they are outsie the car.
I was thinking of pulling the valve covers off in the morning.what do ya'll think. Or just rent a truck and tow it back.

Could it be a HT lead arking out on one of the heads? as they can make quite a load noise sometimes?

I second all the advice not to drive until the problem is proven benign, as least as far as further damage is concerned. The occasional "slap" makes it doubtful the valve clearance is the problem. The ticking makes it doubtful that the tensioner or timing chain are problems.

I like the theory that it is electrical noise, and that is easy to spot. Just be careful - ignition systems are dangerous. Check your belt drives. Ticking can be a bad bearing, and the slap could be the belt failing due to heat or alignment problems. Both of my theories are better than internal engine problems, but both could strand you and both can cause damage. I have a small dent in my rear engine lid from the AC belt breaking on a hot day.

Whereabouts in Atlanta? I am near Howell Mill and I-75. There is a good Porsche shop close by - walking distance.

Listening with a screw driver involves placing the metal tip on the engine and the wooden or plastic handle to your ear. Watch the wires! If they are arcing they are dangerous to the heart. I can't even imagine what a shot to the head would do!

I'm really sorry for your troubles.

Well I decided to get a rental car and drive back to Atlanta, leaving the car here on the Gulf Coast.
I will pick rent a trailer there and come back and pick it up with my truck.
The good news is I talked to the Guy I bought the car from, he said that he would take care of me and put the car in the shop, to find what is wrong. I think was really nice of him.

Thanks for the help I will keep ya'll posted.
