Default Fuel Additive- is it worthwhile or safe?

I came across a product (I'm in UK but is developed in US) called FFi MPG Capsules.

They are tablets that you add to the fuel. I understand they coat (teflon?) the moving parts of the engine internally and therefore protect from wear and improve mpg, reduce emissions and possibly enhance performance.

Are these products proven, safe or worthwhile? Do any Rennlisters have experience of knowledge in this area?

I've struggled with some bad fuel in my car in the past which caused it not to start and when it did start it kangarooed violently. Not your everyday senario but....

My local specialist put me straight on to a product called Forte and told me to add it, top up the tank up and drive at 3000rpm for 10mins. Admittedly i thought this last part was a wind up but it worked. Car ran great after that and the specialist actually adds the product as part of the service to give an internal clean.

Me too. If you are buying Chevron, Shell or other certified fuel, you will do harm if you play with additives. If you buy bad gas, there is no additive that will make it better. At best it is a waste of money.

The problem probably was that it wasn't optimax and that something else had been put in the optimax. It happens. We were mapping an Evo a few years ago and filled up with optimax. As soon as we started mapping again, there was serious knocking. It certainly wasn't optimax but probably a blend of ordinary unleaded and who knows what!

I think the tanker drivers occasionally get confused!

I put a big bottle of Techron in a full tank twice a year to keep my fuel system as clean as possible. Other than that only a fuel stabilizer during the winter when I only get out once a week or so, depending on weather.
