A pity the greenback isn't well matched to the pound these days. Does 9m have any sister or licensee company in the USA?

I see you have an RS pulley on there. Have you tested for hp gains from parasitic loss such as the v-belt drive replaced by a serpentine belt? or using a lighter, smaller, matched pair of alternator/fan and crank pulley? Do you use any sort of "trick" alternator to reduce or declutch at WOT for example? This all might sound a bit "orthogonal" to this engine development but once you've extracted 440bhp an air-cooled boxer, you're approaching theoretical limits and so internal loss (such as the radius caps to clear the casing, also reducing reciprocating mass and leverage) is a final "add lightness" element to the design.

Have you calculated drive-line loss for the transaxle absorbing this engine or are you using averages? I have to wonder if an efficient gear box wouldn't be the next step to delivering more of those neddies to the patch.

What is the time between maintenance on this engine? Does the valve-train or other components require special attention?

This engine inspires me to renew my efforts to find a sunroof delete 993. Congratulations on a wonderful achievement.

Thanks for everyones words of encouragement.

Before I answer your questions CGT I must stress that this engine is a pure track engine that is only road legal in the UK for pre-93 cars only that can run without a cat.

Crate engine is a great question, probably around £30k once a donor engine has been found. Like I said before we are talking to a couple of engine builders at the moment but if anyone is interested we can always ship a kit of parts (subject to non-disclosure agreement, la, la, la).

Parasitic losses and drive efficiency have been considered, but at the moment there is so much more that we can refine first to find a few more gg's that it does not make economic sense to change a fan belt for 1hp for example. Transmission losses are also of low concern because 99.99% of owners would not spend £15k on a 25% more efficient gearbox to gain 10hp at the tyres when a different tyre could give the same result. With 444bhp this car is putting down around 380-390 on our dyno, although it is not easy to measure as we are using additional brake load with the inertia (to help put the power down) and this changes the rwhp figure. I see where you are coming from though and all I can say is that I am on the case, although recent computer model simulations are predicting another 30-40hp at the top of the rev range once we get everything right.

Maintainance schedule for the race engine is in line with the level of use, but in comparison to Porsche's recommended 30hr rebuild interval we aimed at a minimum of a 50hr lifespan although 100hrs is more likely for the average user. Remember though that this is the equivalent of 10,000 miles flat out, on a road/track car you are unlikely to see this use in 50,000 miles. For pure road car we have other conversions (see threads on 993 board) that give 360bhp bolt on with no increased maintainance or lifespan reduction.

Colin,

Thanks for the quick reply. Now go back to the shop and get to work.

: )

I'm thinking a hot rod 993 in the R Gruppe style. A good friend is a professional engine builder specialising in historic race cars -- he'd enjoy the project.

I'd be interested to see what an R Gruppe style 993 would look like?

Hi Colin

Dear friends of the PCGB, and fans of the 964 RS. This unit present in Spa, take some preparation for you Colin, from Ninemeister?
You Colin Belton, is well known. RS 964 has prepared this?

Best regards

Josep

That's Chris Whittle's NGT (with him driving it too). It's a great car.

Strongly agree, the 964 RS, and suspension Cup, and just over 300 bhp is very fast on the track.

I am surprised, Colin preparing to 4.0 liters, because the air-cooled 3.8 with over 350 bhp, being at the limit of reliability. Above that amount of power, the engines are unreliable and break easily.

An engine, even 4-liter with 440 bhp, should have very few hours of use before having to redo engine ...... is reliable, the preparation of Colin .... withstand many hours of use?

Best regards
