I tend to agree, and worse still considering owning a diesel car!
PS: I'm not being offensive, just find it sad that some of the guys are not realising the privelege of owning a 911. And those people who have ultra low mileage cars and hardly drive them is not good either. 911's are for driving often. You need to, to get used to them and get the most from them.

Dave,
The porsche gods are angry.
They are telling you in a loud voice: " Drive to 9M and have the supercharger fitted. Station Wagons must not pass you! "
Best you do it right away. Who knows how angry they will be if you continue to procrastinate.

Oh dear, I know where this could be leading. I was taking the "realist" view, but you are in danger of heading into the "mystical" view. Something along the lines that God himself created 911's and that the true air-cooled spirit shall be revealed only onto the true believers ..."the 911 guys".
I suggest the following course of remedial action. Go to a Harley Davidson rally, a big one, and find yourself a seat at a table of real die hard Harley fans, the real zealots ... you can easily spot them as they all wear T shirts saying "If I had to explain, you wouldn't understand". Buy them a beer, and toast the great God of HD and you will have a gang of new instant buddies. So far so good, these guys have got themself high on the adoration of an icon.
Then screw your courage and ask them what they think of Hondas, or indeed any Japanese motorcycles, and prepare for a barrage of abuse, name calling and the ineviatable "Jap Crap" insults. If you have chosen your company badly and picked some real outlaws, expect a physical pounding as well. Fortunately these days you are more likely to have stumbled upon the usual weekend outlaws, who underneath the HD branded leathers, vests, and hats are all corporate lawyers and real estate guys, who will do nothing more threatening that thump their Rolexes on the table.
Lets now imaging you have stumbled out of the beer hall, and what do you find but a row of new Japanese bikes, cutting edge examples of design, speed and efficiency, parked up near the cherished HDs forged from tube steel and castings with a 1953 part number still on them, even though they are a year old. Can these really be the bikes they truly believe so superior to the modern tackle? You of course as a non accolyte will simply shake your head and wonder why grown men could be so blinded by myth, peer pressure, and brilliant marketing, and hopefully you will walk away, bemused but still with your sense of proportion intact..
This is the "mystical" view of automotive kit taken to its extreme, and it is not a pretty or edifying sight. It was precisely this sort of behaviour that caused me to sell my Harley, (much as I loved it) as in the public mind we were all being tarred with the same brush, and I did not want to be thought of as such a dork.
Here's hoping it doesn't happen with 911's too!

I can appreciate that you were giving an honest opinion. But your comments were those of a non-911 guy. A 911 is something special, it's not about comparing your car to others. The last thing on your mind when you turn the key in a 911, should be other cars. If you find yourself weighing the pros/cons of the 911 vs other machines, I'm afraid you've already missed the point...
It's a car. It's a fun car - it has advantages over some cars, it has disadvantages compared to others (plenty compared to modern cars in fact). Just because it is a 911 doesn't suddenly make it beyond compare - at least not in my book.
I have to say - if the general opinion on this board was that our cars were that good "just because they are 911s" I wouldn't spend much time here.

However, if your point is to enjoy driving and owning the 911 for its own sake, then I wholeheartedly agree with you!

Hmm,
Very interesting points here, but the nub of it all in question form, is what made you buy your car when you did.....Performance? asthetics? racing history... small ...well you know. Anyways, we all purchase with our hearts and heads, if we were to be entirely **** about this, we'd all buy 330d and then worry about tyre presures....and talk about Isetta history..
I bought mine because it was a raw..ish performance car with relatively good residuals, cheaper than a ferrari to run, wonderfull looks, sounds to die for, and it's quirky behaviour and my attention seeking side...whether its better than the xyz, or its nonsensical because its no better than the latest eurobarge is completely academic, I bought it because I wanted one. Simple, if you bought yours for other reasons, that's good too.
But it is a 911, simple, it comes complete with those attachments, like it or not, if you don't get that then, well pity on you, you don't have to buy into that part of Porsche if you choose not to, if you want to then there's the PCGB ha ha...but you are labelled like it or not.....
Kevin.

Its a sports car, it looks great and it should be able to hold its own road or track.
If its just about the badge and the fact its a 911 then swap the motor out and see what you think then.
Modern cars are qucik, they corner well too and are full of safety features.
I really like my 911, love the shap and the styling. I like the fact I only see one on the road every now and then or if I go to a Pcar meet.
I want the power of the Mitsu Evo 8 but I see about 10 million a day! < No joke!
So the Pcar fixes my need in one way but sometimes I want the extra speed, especially when I pay insurance or bills!!! LOL

I think Dave is already 3/4 the way towards the prancing horse, her probably just didn't need the indignity of a Eurobarge giving him a hard time.
Engine rebuilds will never give you the power needed if blowing diesels away is your aim, you really need Christers car or a 9m Blower....
Kevin.....still thinking about the €24k Ruf want for a 420Bhp engine....

I actually considered buying a 996 first because I thought it would be more "practical" and "reliable". But after driving the RS America and understanding its 964 heritage, I was hooked. Screw practicality. I've never worried about it before. Why start now?

Sometimes you find that perfect whatever and fall in love. It could be the smells, the feel, the curves. It could be the looks you get or the feeling you get from the symbol.
Sometimes its a car. Sometimes its a woman.
We don't drive these cars because they are the most practical examples. We are, in some sense, smitten with these cars. This, like even a great woman, doesnt stop us from admiring other examples. The 7 year itch is alive and well with automobiles as well.

I'm not sure i get it at all.
I bought mine car because i remember going in to Strattons in Chesire in 1993, in my then company Ford Escort, and seeing an amazing Turbo 3.6 with black/violet paintwork but couldn't really justify, more like afford, the £81,000 price tag at the age of twenty without resorting to holding up Post Offices. I personally believe for some of us it is nothing more than the realisation of a dream, almost turning the poster on the bedroom wall into reality.
To believe that just because the car is a 911 it is superior to other more modern cars is delusional. I use my M5 Monday to Friday and even at weekend when faced with a choice the P-car doesn't always win purely beacuse of practicality and the fact that certain modern cars offer both amazing performance, V8 noise in this case, accessories and comfort. These qualities shouldn't be dismissed just because they don't have the upright headlights, wide arches, stuttgart badge, speedlines, etc....... (drifting into thought of the P-car whilst typing)
