Default Passenger door not locking without "manual help"

I have a small but annoying issue with the door lock at the passenger side on my 1991 964 C4.

It does not lock when I use the remote or the "lock button" in the central control panel. It can however be locked manually from the inside, and when I step out of the car and use the remote the driver door locks and the alarm is activated on both doors. Unlocking works fine, i.e. both the driver and the passenger side doors unlock exactly as the should. Both with the remote and with the "lock button" in the central control panel.

Has anybody experienced this problem, i.e. unlocking works but locking does not on passenger side door?

What could be the problem? Does anybody have suggestions on how to fix it?

I have the same problem with my passenger door - although I don't have a remote alarm - it just intermittently doesn't want to lock when using the central locking. In fact, it did it for a few months and lately it has fixed itself...but it will be back so any advice on this would be appreciated...

Could be the micro switch on the barrel of the lock is going.

It's the black C-shaped bit in the following photos. It will snap off if you prise carefully at the ends of the C. It's a bit of job getting to it, but there are a couple of good threads on getting there. I got a lot of help when I did mine and posted some info along the way.

It really does sound like the micro switch to me given that the other door and the central locking switch will activate the passenger door lock which suggests to me that the actuating motor and the limit switch on that motor are alright.

(and thanks to whom ever I pilfered the photos from!)

Good luck!
Dave

Thumbs up

Thanks Dave! Well worth a try, and since it looks like a bit of work to get the handle off (as you point out), I will give it a go on a rainy day. Now I will start looking for a new micro switch.

Regards
Joakim

Joakim,

You're welcome.

Door lock microswitch 911.613.133.00 superceded to 964.613.134.00

It's $75 at Pelican Parts (no affiliation).

Sunset Imports is also a favorite around here. They reportedly sell for 15% over cost.

Cheers,
Dave

I have now changed the micro switch into a new one, but unfortunately the problem with locking the passenger side door still remains.

The problem still is that the only way to lock the passenger side door is manually from the inside with the rotating ****. Using the remote, the "lock button" in the central control panel or the key can not lock the passenger side door (unlocking however works fine with all three methods).

Does anybody have other suggestions on what could cause this problem?

This has to be the longest between posts I've ever seen, and not fixed the problem to boot.....

Whereabouts are you? I'm sure one of us could assist.

Yes, it sure has been quite a while since I asked for help concerning this issue, but for some reason I did not get the confidence to attack the door panel, the door handle etc until now...

I live close to Malmo in southern Sweden by the way.

Cheers,
Joakim

Have you looked at adjusting the actuator mounted to the inside of the door panel?

The actuator has limit switches and I had to adjust the position of mine. I simply loosened the mounting bolts and moved it up (or down, don't recall) and my locks started working again.

Thumbs up Problem solved

I have found the cause of my passenger door locking problem ! It was very visible after removing the cover over the actuator.

It turned out to be the "ball joint" on top of the operating rod from the actuator. The plastic part on the top of the actuator had simply broken. In the picture below the broken plastic part is circled in red and the ball where it is supposed to be attached is circled in green.

From the PET catalog it looks like I have to buy the whole operating rod with the plastic part on the top included. Does not look so expensive...

Anyhow, thanks for the help. Hopefully the picture above can help somebody else.

Cheers,
Joakim

Does anybody know the part number for the broken item circled above in red?

I have the same problem, and from the PET it looks like it should be part # 964 537 571 00. But, the part pelican is showing on their website with that number doesn't look like the one in my car..

http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/...37-571-00-M100

Mine looks like the one in the post above... is this the replacement?

Someone double check me but that looks like #21 in the parts diagram.

#21 = 911-531-562-01

It is part # 964 537 571 00, i.e. james944 is correct.

Cheers,
Joakim (who took the picture above inside the door)

I just read this post and agree...I had the same problem which turned out to be the white plastic "ball joint" which basically came apart due to age.
