How noisy should the alternator be?
Mine makes a distinct "woring" sound and seems to be getting louder. is this a sign of bearings on the way out? or am I just being parranoid

hmm not just a woring noise theres a mechanicle clatter/grinding noise happening as well. there is definately a lot more noise happening in there. Noticed it last night well I got home just started the car and it was imediately obvious something is going on.

Alternator
Shortly after I bought my car I noticed the same kind of noise and found the fan was scraping the shroud. Look closely for scrape marks on the bottom of the fan shroud. I replaced the alternator and fan bearing and it seems to be OK now. Although I still have a metallic ringing that I cant really pinpoint but believe is in the exhaust.
I took a whole series of pics on the replacement that I need to post but my pics are to large. How do I make the file size small enough to post?

I'd vote for the rear alternator bearing also. The clanging is likely the fan contacting the shroud. As CraidC said, look for the scrape marks on the shroud.
You can also remove the outside belt (leave on the alt. belt, then spin the fan. If it has a wobble in it you can easily see it.
Easy to replace the alternator, in my opinion. About $160 was the best price I found for a remanufactured (done by Bosch) replacement.

Definitely alternator bearing housing. Happened to me last week - started with a clattering type noise that got slowly worse on the drive to work. Got it into the shop and found the bearing housing was on the verge of seizing - a few bearings missing and plenty of ground up bits. Play in the housing was allowing the fan to scrape on its shroud. Would have been a whole lot worse if I hadn't caught it in time. NZ$500 as it was, parts & labour.

Picture resizer & Alternator
Thanks for the tip Doc. Ill try to get my pics of the alt and fan bearing replacement posted, although there are others already posted if you do a search.
I bought my alternator from these guys for ~$160 + $83 core charge which they were prompt in refunding. They also shipped it to me free.

I bought my fan bearing from Sunset Porsche for ~ $120(I think)
Its not a dificult DIY if you have a 3 pronged puller.
