First one starting from the left is the oil level guage. It's very important to understand this one. You do not want to overfill the oil. The guage only registers with the motor hot and the oil out of the oil tank with the engine idling. The entire range of the guage only covers one quart. Guage will read with engine idling on a level surface as long as the engine is hot (not just warmed up but after some running). Should be around half way. Mine was down towards the red and I added 1/2 quart and it was almost overfilled. The dipstick in the back is also read with the engine hot while idling on a level surface. The min/max marks are about 4 inches apart. These marks also only cover one quart from high to low. This guage will be bottomed out most of the time when you are driving. Don't add oil. Check idling on level surface with hot engine.

Next guage to the right of that one is oil temp. Mine is usually half way or below.

Last one is oil pressure. Usually between 2 and 5 depending on engine speed.

I never have my oil pressure, in none of the cars, around 2. between 4 and 5 always.

Thank you gentleman. Now I've got it straight. I initially felt something was dreadfully wrong with the lubricant delivery system or that the gauges were faulty (..#1 - reading in the red at speed......#2 - oil temp very low on an 88 degree day running hard....#3 - 4 to 5 range at speed...falling off at stop signs.) I have never owned a car with such system of gauges.

that is the beauty of a porsche, that I might add, is not a car but a piece of art.

Enjoy it! The erratic behaviour of all them oil gauges shows your's is NORMAL.

Yes- probably the most solidly built convertible in its day, along with the 500SL Mercedes. The 911 coupes are virtually vault-like! (I can't speak on the watercooled 911s as I have no experience with them)

By the way, not to put words in Miguel's mouth, but I think Miguel is referring to the fact that his oil pressure is between 4-5 always when driving....mine is usually around 2 or so at idle and quickly peggs at 5 when getting to 2K rpm or so (give or take- I don't recall, but it gets to 5 pretty quickly.
