Default Daily driver challenge!

OK folks, the 964's on its way back with the dying engine no longer dying (well, my guy says the test-run is fine but you never know till you've had it back yourself). The problem was the air flow meter which has now been replaced.

The whole thing has got me thinking about getting a second-hand daily driver to save the p-car from the horrible commute for at least 3 days of the week. But I'm tight as hell so here's the challenge: what would you recommend which meets the following criteria?

Max £750 purchase price
Small and easy to drive through London
Very cheap to run
Very reliable
And very cheap to run

Japanese cars are dominating my thinking. Bring on the creative suggestions!

A Fiat 500. It's also a rear-engined classic. Especially if you have the engine cover propped up, Abarth-style.

Good thinking with the 500! I'm toying with an old Skoda for the same reasons...

Me too - problems is my bro has had a few and I want to explore new ground for the sake of it! I really want something that I can just thrash knowing it won't break or eat the fuel. I'm thinking maybe an old XR2 would be a right laugh...!

205Gti - would be fun, probably not that cheap to run though

I've had one - a 1.9 too. Was great fun but such a b'itch around town; the steering was unbelievably heavy. Not relaxing!

yeah why not. i like golfs because i know i can fix them.
i like having a cheap fwd car to thrash about in.
AND after 100 miles in a little hatchback, i appreciate the 964 more when i get into it

I've been considering the Honda Fit for myself.

See this thread for other Rennlisters' opinions.

I got the wife a 106 a few years back as a daily runner - 1.5 diesel. It was great on the juice, 65MPG ish and you could fit loads in the back when you drop the seat down. quite nippy round town and it weighs less than a tuna-mayo sandwich with extra sweetcorn!!!! had it for 4 years without a hitch.
