i have the noise and am gettin ready to do valves and gonna check the tensioners...have a bunch of jobs to do...

but thought maybe the persistant noise could possibly be a flywheel failing??

attached some threads referencing the 'noise'...

I spent some time today with the plastic hose listening around during cold start up, and I'm changing my diagnosis. I'm thinking this noise that I thought was the chain tensioners is in fact the starter gear hanging up when it's cold. The fact that this problem goes away when everything is warm has me thinking the cold and hardened grease is the culprit. I searched around on the forum and didn't find much with regards to sticking starter solenoids, so I'm going to remove the starter tomorrow and hope that's the problem (cheap fix assuming it's a simple matter of regreasing the pinion shaft.
BTW boze_man, I got a 404 error on your links.

i have heard my noise between shifts...not sure if the noise is drown out by the motor under load or if it just returns at shift...

Make sure your oil is a low enough viscosity. Hydraulic parts tend to operate slowly with a heavier viscosity oil.

I removed the starter and the pinion shaft was not hanging like I hoped it would be. I bench tested the starter and everything works fine. No serious wear on the pinion or ring gear. So I lubed the starter shaft and reinstalled. The first few startups (engine cold), and the noise was gone! But after a dozen subsequent cold starts the noise was back. I resumed the listening search while under the car and I'm very confident the noise is not the chain tensioners (cleaned last week). The fact that the first few starts after lubing the starter has me thinking this is a starter issue. I also noticed it's a remanufactured Bosch starter. I'm a little stumped on this. Again, once I drive around the block and warm everything up the startup noise is gone. Thoughts?
