I have to deal with alot of serial connections for my work (Industrial process control, in which tons of equipment still uses serial) and I have found the USB serial converters to be very flakey. Some will work some of the time, other times the USB converters simply won't work at all.

I use a PCMCIA serial card now, available from http://www.socketcom.com/product/serial.asp
they cost a bit more, but they work 100% of the time, and you don't waste a pile of effort trying to diagnose where the communications problem is originating from.

You need to eliminate the USB unknown from the equation. Even if you have to haul your desktop outside, you need to try a conventional serial port to at least tell you where your problem is..

There are four parts to the connector, #928514 (rear shell), #928515 (cable clamps), #828776 and #928740 (pinside of the connector). None of these are available from Amp because they were made under contract for Bosch. The connector is still available from Porsche ranging in price from $150USD to $385USD depending on what you are hooking upto, the Hammer, PST2 or PIWIS.
To make proper connectors yourself your looking at $4USD/each for resin, $200USD/100 for silicone, vacuum pump ($250+USD) & chamber(belljar) to degas the silicone, pressure pot ($100USD) for casting under pressure and an air-compressor. The molds take a day to create and the connectors would take about an hour each before you could demold (obviously depends on the polyurethane.) The other option is to spend $20000USD for injection molds and another $10-20000USD for a small run of connectors in 30% glass-filled nylon.

cable is still available but it wil take a while to get from germany, cost is 230.00. I think they have to make it cause they dont keep this in inventory no longer.

It was probably your order that caused PAG to refill their inventory (and tack on an additional $115). Last year I tried to buy the PST2 connector and there were none available and I was told they would never again be available but now... it seems to be the case with just about everything I've been told is/will be NLA. Once inventory levels reach zero PAG reorders and ups the price a few dollars but the parts are still available.

I still think that a round pcb with the orientation cut outs and five pins could be made for very little.
For the home user this is more than adequate .

The factory lead could double as a useful tow line for when DME relay problems occur !! and the cost !!!!

I am probably going to change over to the OBDII socket anyway ,
just like a 96 - 993.Lots of leads and parts for very little money.

So John Speake's offer is very reasonable then. As you will be connecting up to the interface you only have four cables to connect up to the connector. Connector + interface + a little box for the interface adds up to less than £85 i would guess.

I would be in for it if some vendor could get a kit together. I still cant find a interface. Is there going to be a list for a group buy from John or is it just email him and get the discount?

As I said not sure how these thing work. I assume first five to put there names up and then send John the money. I know John has been watching the thread so if you want to chime in John your most welcome.
With respect to the interface hang on in there with Andy W i have had parts from him before he's pretty good at getting supplies in. the alternative is to either build the gregg K desgn or possibly the Jeff Noxon design. Worth trying ebay too!
