Use 993 Oil Filter Console on 964 Engine?
In the category of "while it is apart" I am interested in seeing if anyone has fitted the on engine oil filter console used on the 993 onto the 964 case. Thoughts?

Yes, I did this on my engine. You need to pull the plugs in the case which allows the oil from the thermostat housing to the filter and from the galley in the back of the case to the filter. You need to run the 964 Turbo thermostat housing which blocks of the hole from the thermostat to the oil galley in the back of the case. If you run the 993 thermostat housing cover oil will bypass the oil filter. The 993 case does not have this hole.

I'm not sure specifically which line you are referring to. I'm planning on using all of the stock lines with the exception of the main line out of the case where I'll use a 1974 part which goes directly under the transmission rather than to the back of the case and then forward again. For that I'll have to fabricate something.

The oil feed line I am interested in is from the oil tank to the engine case (and then on to the oil pump for provision as "fresh" oil to the oil distrbution circuits in the engine). Most call this the "suction" line. On the 964 this is done with the oil line from the tank in the '1972' position (at least in a stock 964). In your car I am expecting that you might have put the tank up front. Either way, I thought the oil fitting for the suction line on the 993 was different from the 964 version. The 993 has a hard line that bolts to the engine case with an o-ring seal on a small section of pipe that is inserted into the engine block. The hard line is very short and connects to a rubber flex line for a bit then back to hard line to the tank.
You know all this, my interest is a little different since I have the 964 case in a pre -90 chassis, so my stock oil tank is behind the right rear wheel. I suspect I will just get the 993 version of the "3.6 transplant" conversion line and that should get me all connected once the 993 oil filter is in place.
Cheers,

Reading this with interest - What are the advatages of switching to a 993 oil filter console over the 964 ? Not familiar with the 993 set up/ sorry. I have been thinking of switching to a dual filter sytem and placing it in the rear of the right wheel well. Using protective sheet metal.

The oil filter is after all of the other oil system components, and just before the main oil distribution circuits in the engine.
This is an additional filter, so you get a "last chance" to catch any problem particles. Porsche added this to keep oil clean for the Hydro Lifters which have small oil passages.

Chris,
Did you make any progress on this? I'm going to add the same filter housing to my 90 C2 (to hopefully keep whatever made a mess in my engine from happening again..... )
Is it possible to use the stock line that is below the console? Or does it need to be changed?
Thanks
