Garrett:
Good call. Besides the worn electrodes, the threads have lost some of the corrosion protection and finish. Push plugs too long, and you risk damaging the heads or other parts if the ignition system. If a $60 maintenance item once per year is too much of a a bite, we should probably switch to a 4-cylinder economy car we can afford to maintain.

Do you know that some plugs are now rated to 100,000. miles or ten years ?
I've never had a plug damage a head on any of my cars .
I keep my plugs filed and gaped so no extra ignition strain .
I really do not like getting rid of things that work fine or spending money replacing things that work fine . As for the little zinger about what we should own , I have a few brand new sets of factory plugs
awaiting the day when they are needed , until the old plugs are truly in need of replacement , the new plugs will stay in the factory fresh porsche boxes that they came in .

Anyone know what the difference is between the Bosch and the Beru. Both are on the same page that Garrett referenced above.
I suppose this is sort of like the oil debates, but I don't know much of anything about plugs and was wondering why the Beru are twice the price.

Tri-lobed? Try harder!
Garrett-
Hi. That red car you helped me tear into about 4 months ago in your driveway had tri-gap plugs like yours when I had its PPI done. The PPI guy gave me a glowing report... except for the spark plugs. He said they needed replacement -- about 30-40k miles ago! lol
Their anode (cathode?) post was a little more tri-lobed than yours. (ahhh -- but not by much... ) I kept one of 'em for giggles, but it's packed away somewhere now.
At the time I was considering backing away from the buy because of that tell of potential maintenance neglect. But I went through the receipts and damned if the previous owners had done everything BUT plugs. Weirdest thing I've ever seen.
Knowing your cars see engine drops more frequently than most any other I know of, () engine neglect just isn't in the cards.
But replace the plugs, G. And thanks again for your Hammer-time.

Dude, WTF....
I bought these spark plugs recently (NGK BPR6EIZ 6637) because everything I checked online said that these plugs fit the car. I was going to install them this weekend, so today I was getting my socket-game sorted when I realized these new plugs take a 13/16 socket, not the 5/8s like what I expected and like what's currently on the car.
I assume that these won't fit and I should return them? I could barely even get a 13/16 socket into the opening on the valve cover.

I ended up going with the Denso Iridium 5310 IK22.

Hopefully they'll come in this week and I can move forward with installing the during the weekend.

While it seems either can be used on an 944 Turbo, I doubt that is the case on the 964. The space confines would make it impossible to get a 13/16 socket lined up and inserted into the holes on the valve covers while the engine is in the car.
