What don't you like about the 5 sp? Just curious.

There is an article in 911/PW dated Jan/05 about putting a 993 six speed tranny in a 964 C2.

You could always get a back issue. It did not sound too difficult to do.

Hey now that's an idea. Except won't the ratios be tuned for the 993 270hp engine and its torque/hp characteristics? Doesn't Ruf make a 6 speed for the 964?

I have a 993-6sp 2nd version (G50-20) in my C2. At first it was a big difference compared to the long gearing of the Swiss 5sp box. However, after a time I started to wonder what good a hypothetical top speed of 312 km/h is. So I had the final drive swapped to a shorter gearing (8:32) and now the car is absolutely fantastic to drive. Was not cheap, though.
Eggplant Cab is touching a good topic, hence. The gearing of the 6sp is an issue but not due to engine differences but noise and emissions legislation coming in force at the 993's time.

A 6spd is a worthwhile investment only if you change the gearing. 6th is not really used here in the US which effectively makes it like your 5spd box. Changing the gearing, now that is another thing entirely...

Smile 6 sp.

There are two things I would like to do with a 6 sp. swap.Frist is to have more gear choice in town. Also, I would like to improve acceration. While changeing the final drive ratio would do this it would make highway driving rather loud and would kill gas mileage. With the 6th gear the problem is fixed.Granted that is a lot of money and work, but when did owening a 964 or any Porsche make sence.

Owning a 20k-ish 964 makes more sense than a new Honda Accord...at least to me...

If you haven't tried a 993 6 speed, you should before you tear apart the 964 5 speed. In the city the 1st gear of the 6 speed was a pain in the a.., pretty much a nuisance. I constantly redlined in 1st gear on my 993 within 50 yards. hardly ever used 6th gear except on the open road. I would take the 964 5 speed over the 993 6 speed anytime. Besides, whenever challenged by another car at a light, by the time I shifted thru first, it was too late. My $.02

Buy a used transaxle
Buy new gear sets
Regear trans
Buy new ring and pinion
Remove and replace ring and pinion
Remove old transaxle
Install new transaxle
Any other parts needed for said switch ? Like clutch parts ?
Total cost for some or all of the above ?

Well I don't drive the 964 on the street anymore, but I think the 5-speed is just fine for daily use. My 993 (6-speed) has short ratio gears (and a LWF) and it's a pain in bumper-to-bumper traffic. The 5-speed allows you to be lazy and do a lot less shifting while putt-putting around town or the track but my 6-speed does allow more brisk acceleration when desired.

The trade-off with close ratio gears like mine is highway gas mileage. I had 5th moved to 6th and 2-5 replaced. If I was to do it again, I think I'd leave 6th alone for a highway cruising gear and re-do 2-5.

Last toy does make a good point above--the US G50/20 Gearbox has pretty screwy ratios in First and second gear. Thereafter it is great, but First gear is way too short and second too tall. Many of the 993 folks have talked about or actually gone through the expensive process of regearing their trannys to the G50/21 specs with great results.

It all depends on how much money you want to spend I suppose [as with most things in Porsche-dom!]

The RUF CTR has a 6 speed. Odds of finding one are slim though : (

I went for the 6sp because of the long gearing of Swiss 5sp boxes - completely nonsense in the Alps but oh so silent...
With the short final drive the gearing is perfect for mountain roads - it throws you at the bends and Ducati bikers hate me!
On the motorway, the engine redlines at 270 km/h (approx. 170mph), so you still can go usefully fast. However, I redlined in the old 5sp, too. That was 280, then...
If you want to make the best of your hp, a short 6sp is a good help to go really fast. However, if cruising is your priority, look elsewhere. Somebody might be selling a tiptronic, after all.
