Default Window washer not working

My window washer doesn't work anymore. The pump and the stalk are OK. I have looked at the wiring diagram and think the problem might be caused by a faulty relay (R53). My car is fitted with the "Intensive washer" option and this works OK.

Could someone pull their R53 and see if the standard window washer still works?

I can test for it you tonight when I get back home, but why don't you temporarily swop out another similar relay for the R53 to see if it works? Of course, I am assuming there is another identical relay in a different position in the relay box, so excuse my ignorance if this is not the case.

I don't think any of the other relays are interchangable / identical. It would be of great help to me if you pulled your R53 and checked if the normal window washer functions as normal.

I am in the same boat - no water on regular wash, but fast wipe mechanism and intensive wash both work. R53 is the relay for intensive wash, why would that affect regular wash? The regular wash fuse #24 is intact..

Hiya Johnny G Pipe
Do you hear the pump running ?
If you do an amp test on one leg of fuse # 24 , do the amps to the pump jump up when you turn on the pump ?
If you pull the hose from the pump off of the first splitter and then run the pump do you get water flow ?

If you check the wiring diagram you will see that R53 is also used for the regular window wash pump (I think). I have ordered a new relay and hope this will solve the problem.

Hiya Pingo
You could just jumper the relay socket and see if the thing pumps .

It is not clear how you would jump R53, or if you could that it would have any effect on regular windshield pump washer operations. The power line runs straight from stalk to the pin O44 of central electrics, does a u turn and powers out to the pump trough pin N14. The power from pin O44 then runs to R53, then through a diode in R53 and out to R42 the intermittent wiper relay.

To check and see if you have power from stalk to pump you can pull R53, note which spade connector is labelled T and connect the positive lead from a voltmeter to T receptacle in relay box and the negatvie to ground. Then pull on the stalk and you should get 12 volts on the meter.

Thanks folks! No pump noise, no volts at T receptacle..seems like I have a stalk fault. Thank goodness for intensive wash back up(which now has regular wash fluid in it).

I suppose the easiest thing would be a used stalk off ebay..
