Default How often to change spark plugs

Hi Folks,

Just starting to get my car ready for the summer, and a visit to the 24hr at Le Mans.

I wondered how often the spark plugs should be changed ?
Car has 85k miles, but has done only 10k in the last 5 years. I can't see that theyve been changed since 70k miles. Is it worth doing ?

I'm with rodders.

I have no idea when the PO changed the plugs on my car.....all i know is that it now doesnt start first time. Usually second try and occasionally third.

I changed the distributor caps and rotors yesterday (that helped) and will be changing the plugs within the next 2 weeks. Somewhere on this forum i saw plug changes are due every 24,000 miles. Someone will correct or confirm that i'm sure.

I don't have any problems with the car as such, but just try to do a little extra each year. last year I did the distributer base with the belts, year before virtually new exhaust. This year strut brace and major service I think.

If you haven't used it much, my advice would be to put a few miles on the car to see if anything is about to go because of the lack of use eg rubber pipes getting brittle. Then have the major service at which they will change the plugs any way. Get this done before you go to Le Mans because it would be such a shame to break down on the way.

A strut brace is a good idea, it tightened up the front end of my C4 cab a lot.

Actually badly worded that bit, I had already fitted the strut brace, and was amazed. the steering's much more responsive, and the car feels a lot better particularly into corners.

The Work Shop Manual, and Streather, suggest changing the plugs every 20,000 km (12,500 mi).

Why not pull out an easy ? one and take a look ??
Generally a look at the electrode gap and the condition of the ceramic insulator will tell all !!
Hope that helps .

Anything special you do when pulling plugs to clean out the grit that could fall into the cylinder head?

A blast of compressed air will blow away anything loose before you pull a plug .
