Now here's the question I've been trying to get answered: In the SECOND photo from the start, what are those two plugs for, what do they connect, what is associated with all those wires?

They are power, ground and non shielded wiring distribution or terminal plugs. They supply to the units mounted under the seats.

Thanks adrian......what units? what do they do ? I don't have anything other than the ecu, wish I knew what was there before.

I have no idea what is in your car I am afraid. You will see wire looms running off and branching off. I am afraid I do not have the time to go into details. The stuff under the seats is all covered in my book and to be even more specific the wiring diagrams have to be consulted.
If you take out your right seat you will find more goodies. With your car being a hybrid I would expect parts and untis to have been removed so you might find extra plugs elsewhere.
