Talking Present for 15th birthday - progress report

My car will celebrate her 15th birthday this year, and I decided to give her a treat over the winter. It's nothing compared to the rebuilds that are being reported on here, but I took some pics and threw together a little webpage anyway: 15th birthday page

The work's not finished yet, but it shouldn't take much longer. The car will be in fine fettle for a Rennlist North Wales run in the spring/summer

Cheers,

JW

JW, fantastic!! What dedication to your 911/964... If ever a Porsche 911/964 deserves the "Happy Birthday Wish", it’s to You and your Car for another 15 years to come. Great pictures and text... As soon as I finish this post, I’m going to make a cup of coffee and pass my "cheers onto to you!!"..
Thanks for a Sunday Turn-on...
All the best from my 911/964 and me,
Marc.

Man; you must have plenty of time, ambition, and $. I'm scared to tackle my valve adjustment but you've surpassed that in miles. Nice job. Vavle covers look great, too.

JW... Nice site! Good info. I need to pull my injectors and check seals and hoses for brittleness too. I'll bet that's what my idle is a little off when the weather turned cold.

*Cough*, I just asked my friendly specialist to spend some time on my car. I'm in no hurry, so he can do the work at his leisure. My involvement is limited to discussing what needs to be done and what's better left for later, taking pictures, and paying the bill

Once the work's finished I'll post a follow-up with the parts that were used. So far it's about 400 EUR in parts and 8 hours of labour. I estimate another 8 or so hours of work to put it all back together again, and to do the final cosmetic bits. With a bit of luck the total bill won't break the bank, and it'll keep maintenance limited to a nice short annual service *fingers crossed*.

Once the car's in running condition again we'll get some estimates for a local paint touch-up of the left rear quarter panel, and for fixing the scratches that were caused when the rearview mirror's glass came loose and kept flapping into the door, dangling by the heater wires

Anyway, once I'd decided not to sell the car in the next few years, it was only a question of *when* to do this, not *if*

Cheers,

JW

It seems the easiest way to get some decent pics taken of my car

The work should be finished early March, depending on whether or not I need it for an afternoon of drifting fun by then
It should be up and running again mid-March at the latest regardless

Unhappy Update

Just got a call from my mechanic, with good news and bad news.

The good news: all the bits are back in the car, and the engine is running again. It started up at the first try and ran nicely

The bad news: the left rear shock is knackered
I'd had a bit of a gut feeling that there was less grip in the rear than normal, but put it down to bald tyres and inconsistent tyre temperatures/pressures.
Looks like it was the shock going south instead.

As the Koni shocks are adjusted from the top, it's a bitch to adjust the rears when the engine and assorted stuff is in the way. So I'd asked to put the rear shocks a bit firmer. The left one started squirting oil while being adjusted
I'm no mechanical genius, but I gathered that shocks normally don't squirt oil

It's not altogether bad, as I'd much rather find the problem now and fix it, then go an an Alpine trip (or even worse, a Rennlist North Wales run ) and find myself stranded.

Anyway, the Konis are supposed to come with a lifetime warranty; we'll see how that works out...

Cheers,

JW

Nice site JW.
Geoff- don't fret the valve adjustment. It's not really the actual adjusting of the valves that's difficult but accessing them and taking off all the required parts to reach them. I'm sure it will be no problem for you.

Thanks I need to update it more, though...

There's also some shock progress: Koni think it'll be covered by warranty, but they want to have a look at it before giving a final verdict.
To speed things up I've asked my mechanic to order a new one right now; Koni doesn't mind refunding it if it turns out to be a warranty matter, and I need a new one regardless

I wouldn't want to miss that Rennlist North Wales run, once John has his car back on the road. Unless he's just trying to stall us and wants to wait for the Cayman

Cheers,

JW

Great site JW.

Shouldn't you replace both rear shocks at the same time?

Good question. My mechanic feels that as the other shocks are about 2 years old and have only seen a modest amount of miles, it shouldn't be a problem to replace just the one. As long as you make sure that it's at a similar firmness setting as the other one, of course

Cheers,

JW

Would appreciate if you can post a follow-up when you get an answer from Koni. I just put a new set, front and rear on mine. I'll have to start fiddling the setting, I left them on the (standard=medium?) setting they came in. Any tips for adjusting these?

...but at the nordschleife
I'd say 2 years of regular driving there will have made the koni's work hard !!!
