Default Crate Engines

Crate Engines?

I have a 964 that was top end rebuilt by the previous owner to the tune of $10,200. After monitoring these boards for a while it seems that rebuilds are very common in the p-car world. Why do we as a group seem to favor a rebuild rather than just put “crate” engines in?

I was asked the question the other day and had no idea.

Hiya JONES199
Do you have a listing for a crate engine ? A price for a crate engine ?
I called a local porsche dealer for a quote on a new 993 motor , $ 55,000.
Non in the system even if I wanted to buy .

Because they are Porsche's and not Miata's. A rebuild is much, much cheaper than a new engine.

Plus they're made with quality components that can be reused in the rebuild process.

Its only recently (in the past two or three years) that Porsche dealerships have been willing to discount enough that it made sense financially to buy a rebuilt engine from PAG. I'm sure the price has risen since but when I first looked into it in 2002 the 964 & 993 crate engines were available for around $7800 (with a core exchange). Retail pricing at the time was around $15k so $10k for a local rebuild wasn't a bad idea. Nowadays with the resources available to us here on Rennlist/PelicanBBS and with Wayne's engine rebuilding book it makes even more sense to DIY for 1/3 of the cost.

What is this book you speak of. Is is 964 specific? I'd like to buy one.

The book is not 964 specific. However, it has enough information to "guide" you in a 964 rebuild. I used the book (Wayne's How to Modify and Rebuild your Porsche 911 Engine) in addition to other books (factory manual, Adrian's, PET) to accomplish my rebuild.
