LW clutch needs replacing ?
Guys,
I have the LW clutch / flywheel set up in my '90 C2 and in the last couple of weeks I have started to notice what I think is the clutch beginning to slip. So far it's only noticeable if you floor it from about 3K in 3rd or 4th. The revs jump up to about 5k and then it bogs down and the engine speed gradually builds up. Assuming this is the clutch on it's way out (very annoying given it's done 20K miles maximum), what is the best I can hope to get away with ? If I change it now hopefully I can salvage the flywheel. If that's the case, what parts will need replacing, approx cost etc ?????
Thanks in advance.

Christer,
Just wondering what parts I will need assuming the flywheel isn't trashed. Are any of the parts in the whole clutch set up re-useable or do you need new everything every time the clutch wears out ? Are all the bolts etc re-useable ? The 'clutch kits' available seem to contain a lot of parts, but if it's only the pressure plate that's worn out can one simply replace that and save the cost of all the other parts ????? No doubt I'm being overly optimistic here !

hmmmm......if you don't ask.....
I have no idea, but I guess that the kits consist of the most common parts that need replacing and if you don't do them you might have to pay the same labour charge again just to replace that bolt or whatever that you 'saved' money on before...

The clutch kits generally contain new clutch disc, pressure plate, and throwout bearing. Your disc though is from an RS so it is a sprung hub and not generally found in the standard kits. If your clutch is just bad with only 20K miles, then you should be able to get by with just replacing the disc, and the bolts holding on the pressure plate. Depending upon how much heat has built up, you may need a slight surface on the flywheel and a check on the pressure plate.
You are looking at around US $200 for the disc, and a few dollars for the bolts. Labor time would be 5-8 hours depending upon the shop (I have seen places that will charge up to 12 hours - beware).

Thanks Bob, I was hoping that might be the case. Can someone give me the part number for the RS clutch disc ? I will see what price my local OPC quote me !

The part number has changed 4 or 5 times. The current number is 996 016 015 30 This is the same disc that comes in the GT3RS cars and is the upgrade for the DMF GT3s. Porsche does a number of things right, and then sticks with it... Got to love that...

Do they make a clutch kit for the RS? Nothing like that over here. Just the standard DMF replacement clutch kits. You are correct on the part number. They changed it yet again....
