Finally bought the 964!!!
After months of searching and lots of time pestering people asking endless questions about every possible aspect, I have finally taken the plunge and bought a 964.
Its a Carrera 2 from 1993, with 89,000 kms (about 55k miles). The car is metallic black with black leather seats and is completely "stock".
Now I have a few questions (of course) already:
- The oil pressure gauge seems to indicate high pressure even when the car is cold (it marks on the 4 very soon). I know the car is in need of a service, could this be the cause? Oil tank does not seem to be overfilled.
- The a/c radiator seems to drip a little water (or other fluid) as soon as the car is started. What could this be?
Pictures will be posted as soon as they are taken and scanned.
Congratulations!! I know you researched your purchase thoroughly and were looking long and hard.
It's normal for your oil pressure to be high, especially when first started up (cold). If you sit in your parked car for a short while after a cold start up, you can actually watch the oil pressure needle dropping towards about the 2 mark (the normal reading for a warm engine at idle).
Under normal driving, your oil pressure reading should follow engine speed. Increase engine speed, oil pressure increases. Decrease engine speed, oil pressure decreases.
While "as soon as the car is started" seems a bit soon, the moisture coming from your car sounds like normal condensation--assuming the A/C is on. Or perhaps you had been running the window defogger? I'm sure you've owned an A/C equipped car before, right? You'll leave a trail of water wherever you drive, as moisture in the ambient air is condensed on your A/C evaporator. BTW, is your A/C cold?
I remember we first spoke when I was still looking at 993s! Its been quite some time since then, mainly of intensive research and lots of learning.
Thanks for the tips. I also spoke to a mechanic and he said the same as you concerning the oil presuure. However, regarding the fluid being dripped he suggestetd it could be oil cooler needing replacement (but I thought that was on the passenger side). I will check to see if the fluid is water or oil...
I am taking the car in for a major service next week (all filters, oil, brake fluid, gearbox oil, valves, etc.) and it won't get driven in the meantime anyways.
In response to your question, yes the a/c does work. I was quite amazed at that, but it actually seems to be able to chill the cabin colder than is comfortable. (not that that is hard here in the UK.) Of all cars I saw, this was the only one with working a/c, so that was another good thing for it.
Bye
Yes, A/C that works--if not necessarily as good as the average Japanese economy car--is one of the strong points of the 964 and newer 911s. On days when the sun isn't shining too strong, my A/C gets cold enough to make the wife beg for mercy.
You're right, the oil cooler is in the passenger-side, front fender. Try leaning on your right-front fender after a drive ... it will be distinctly warm.
If the drip really does turn out to be water, I can't imagine being worried about it. The only thing that uses water on a 964 is the windshield washer. And, I'm assuming that if it was leaking, you would have an empty reservoir. Oh, and the "water" should be blue ... hopefully, the previous owner wouldn't put in straight water. Might get away with that in So. Cal, but not in a climate like yours.
Have fun, Mr. "93 C2, metallic black"!
The car sounds like it's functioning normally to me.
As far as the oil pressure goes, when oil is cold it's thicker, and the oil pressure is higher because of this, even at low RPM. As the oil heats up, it gets thinner, at which point it will, as Randall said, follow the engine RPMs. Let the car heat up for a while. If the oil pressure indicator "settles down" at an idle and then shoot up as you give it gas, everything is fine. If on the other hand, it still indicates a high level, odds are it's the oil pressure sender unit.
As far as the other (AC??) leak goes, check the leak and make sure it's water. Ig it is, it's no big deal. If it's oil, then you've got some type of leak.
Congratulations on your purchase. I love my 964.
Later,
Bill Wagner
Congratulations for your 964!!
I bought mine exactly 2 months ago and have enjoyed every minute of it! Wish you a lot of fun with yours.
Did you buy it in the UK or are you importing it?
I have a few pics of my gauges showing a cold start, followed by another shot 10 minutes later. Have a look at this site so that you can compare your gauges with mine:

Giorgio, I remember when you got yours I was very jealous because I never thought I would end up with a 93 model. Well, luckily enough I have. I did buy it in the UK, but it had been imported in 1997.
I already had printed your dashboard pics out for reference! In fact, its those that make me worry! When my car is at 2500 revs the oil press is the same as when your is at 4000...
cheers
