Post Sport Engine Mounts

I was wondering if anybody is using the euro RS motor mounts on their C2. I heard these were quite a bit stiffer then the stock mounts. I'm looking for soming stiffer to keep the motor in place a little better. On the C2 Turbo's, the intercooler comes into contact with the deck lid in a couple of places under load.

I tried searching but their wasn't much discussion in the past. There was a mention about the 993 cab mounts being "stiffer" but no first hand experience. I'm also looking for a shop that sells the mounts....thanks

I'm just getting ready to order the Carrera RS mounts for my C2. They look to be the same as the sport mounts I used on my SC - hard rubber surrounded by metal - should provide some stiffening without going to solid mounts. Besides the mounts and two large through bolts, there's some different sized washers to finish it up. Last quote I had on the mounts themselves was around $110 (list around $145) each from Porsche. Part number / part (quantity) are:

964.375.043.80 / Mounts (2)
901.305.311.00 / seat (4)
900.082.030.02 / M12 bolt (2)
999.025.074.02 / washer (4)
999.025.134.02 / washer (4)

I have them on my car and I like them. I don't have too much to say about them as the were installed with other work and it was difficult to isolate their effect.

Bill, excellent. Just what I was looking for.

Are you getting these directly from the Porsche dealer? Are you changing out the trans mounts as well??

Where do you get these mounts? I've searched vertex and pelican parts catalog, but they came up empty.

On my car, there is a metal cap on top covering the engine mount. How do you get this off?

thanks,
anthony

Jeff, I'll order the parts from Reeves Porsche in Tampa (1-800-835-9256 EXT.299 Kenn Young, parts mgr) as they discount around 25% and will order parts from Germany. On the transmission mount, I'll probably install the RSR mount, which is harder rubber than the RS mount. It's on the to-do list....

Anthony, you can't take the cap off the stock mounts. That whole aluminum can on each side is the mount. You undo the nut under the engine support directly below the mount, while supporting the engine, take out the screws on either side of the can itself, and pull it out.

The part I find curious is the approx. 1 1/2" spacer between the engine support and the body, which isn't in the parts catalog. I haven't taken things apart yet, however.

Bill,
I think the RSR/Cup uses all solid mounts which means those white very hard plastic donuts for the transmission. The RS transmission mounts are different and a stiffer rubber as far as I know.

The RSR mount, also used in the 964 Carrera Cup cars is part number 964.375.055.70. I am holding one in my hand and it is not solid but made of very hard rubber. This mount was used along with solid magnesium mounts for the engine.

Cuppie,

Which is the one made out of hard plastic? It's two parts. Here's a photo:

Here's what my RSR trans mount looks like. I just got it from the Porsche racing department in Germany. Stickers are from factory, one barely seen says:"Made In Germany". I have not seen the white plastic mount you have pictured.

Just came across a little more info (can't just let this thread die off!).

One of our local shops suggested using the 89 Sport mounts to replace the hydraulic version in the C2. They do this on a regular basis. These are the same versions that can be used on the pre-964 bodied cars.

Has anybody here done this?

I had the RS mounts in my C2 for about three years. Last year, at Mid Ohio, during a heated run session, the right mount sheared off and the only thing that stopped the engine from hitting the road was the AC compressor got wedged on the tub mounting. The engine was sitting 1/2 inch from the ground. To this day, my right side B&B exhaust tip is still bent from when the engine shifted down Believe it or not, the rubber was very hard, almost brittle. I've since then switched to solid motor mounts, billet I think. I never felt one bit of difference, pro or con, the ride was the same...they definitely look much cooler

Alrighty then...we need to get to the bottom of the transmission mount issue:

As I have my motor/trans. out at the moment for a "refresh", I've considered changing out the trans. mount, because I know it is VERY difficult, if not impossible with the drivetrain in the car.

The motor mounts...I may attack now, but preferably later as the money tree is begging for Miracle Grow at the moment!!

Which trans. mount should I use??

The "new" one on the market is from Weltmeister and comes with a RIDICULOUS price tag attached!!

Doesn't the trans. mount to be pressed in/out -or- can the DIY mechanic facilitate installation with simple shop tools?

Sorry, I have NOTHING to add on the motor mount issue, but seeing that we have bridged off into the discussion of trans. mounts - let's get to the bottom of it.

JC and Cupcar-

The white trans mount is a 993 motorsport part. I was laying on my back bench pressing a 6-speed G50 into a '96 cupcar at WSIR not to long ago, and I remember the teflon bushing/mount.

Jeff,

If it were me (and I may get one too, but it's lower on the priority list), I'd install the RSR mount referenced above. Gert can get it for you.
