The second or third time you do this this week will go a lot faster.

Once the ball-end pops off, unscrew it off the cable, and pull off the rubber seal so it can slide back through the tunnel unhindered.
After ruining an accelerator cable (sub-freezing weather and plastic don't mix) (and during my 2nd drop for the same clutch job) I discovered its easier to remove the throttle cable on the engine and leave it attached to the pedal and at the opening in the transmission tunnel. It just twists and pops out of the throttle body.

And anytime you crack a fuel line its less messy if you run the engine and then pull the fuel pump fuse (not the DME relay). The lines will be pretty empty afterwards. Nice job (how dirty is your camera now?)

Are you going to remove the power steering while you have the car all appart? I hear this saves some weight.

Looks Like fun. What is the reason for the engine to come out? 3.8 liter upgrade?

Hmmm, I'd do the 3.8 upgrade if it just wasn't so expensive, and if this engine didn't pull so hard as-is (also it would put me in a race class where I really wouldn't stand a chance!). It runs too well to mess with it at this time - it's coming out for a little clutch/flywheel work

I think a C4 without power steering would be tough - I think the steering is just fine - not as darty as my 65 911... I wonder how much weight difference there is with a manual rack?!

Like you have a chance now! Nice write up! Do you think this job would have been easier if you had a lift?

PS. I enjoyed your article in the POC magazine! Great perspective! Make me want to consider a C4 race car.

Very nice garrett. Why couldn't you have dont this last week?

I thought about taking the bumper off as well, but with the Grand Prix white, I didn't want to get any more of my grubby fingerprints on the paint. Your engine is so much cleaner than mine, I am going to have to take out all of the oil system and clean everything around it. Thank goodness I have a 15yr old with nothing better to do!

BTW, if you get a second jack and put it under the floor pan with a board the width of the car, you can raise the car enough to slide the engine out without removing the rear bumper.

Good idea Geoffrey, I almost did that but thought I'd try the bumper removal. It's amazing how heavy the rear bumper is! Geez!

Here's the LUK flywheel - it's actually pretty neat how it works - it permits almost 45 degrees of rotation... unless my flywheel is worn out

Garrett,

I guess it must really be the season for this stuff.
I am right in the middle of dropping my engine on my '89 C4 to do some clutch/flywheel work as well.

I wish you had posted this on friday, because figuring out how that PDAS slave cylinder came out was a nightmare!

Rather than draining the power steering fluid i just put a 'line clamp' on it. (little $3 gizmos meant to pinch against lines to seal them off while you are working on an engine. Very handy.)

Everything's cleaned up, tuned up, fixed up, and ready to go back together! How exciting!

The later intakes (on 91 and later) have black plastic intakes vs aluminum like 90's (and 89's) cars

So should I ask why your valve covers are silver and not cream coloured?
