Hot Fim Induction Modification
My C2 has the AMD hot film and chip modification fitted in December 1998. It runs beautifully with a stonking dyno proven 286bhp and 264lbs ft (with the standard exhaust and cat still fitted). I am interested how many other 964's out there have this mod, and does anyone know of any maintenance data regarding it?

Mine has the AMD hotfilm along with throttle bodies cat bypass etc for 298bhp
The hot film failed recently but its a generic part and cost £200 fitted to replace

Mine has the MAF too and it's been reliable for me. I have no idea as far as maintenance is concerned because the PO put it on and the company that manufactured it has since closed its doors.

Hot film conversions are popular on E30 M3s, but we don't see them mentioned so much on here
It does, after all, seem a very logical way of increasing performance, as all you're doing is improving the least efficient part of the system...

This is one of the kits available for the E30 M3 http://www.splitsec.com - they don't do a kit for the 964, but do sell generic parts...looks like about $850 for the components...someone care to try it?
They have a west coast Porsche specialist as a dealer...

Interesting responses, that I can add some more information to......My car's original invoice for this mod was for £1700 back in 98! AMD have since stopped doing 964's due to a lack of customer demand (at that cost I can see why). I have seen many 964 RS advertised with the "hot film" and just wondered how many more cars (essentially UK based) have had this mod, what experiences people have had.
Has anyone else got something to add on this subject?

Hot film is a air measuring system replacing the factory "barn door" air metering system with a more efficient one. In the MAF (Mass Air Filter) a thin wire stretches across the intake. As far as I understand it, a current is run through the wire which heats it to a certain temperature. As air flows over the wire it decreases the temperature an amount related to the amount of air flowing over it. This temperature change sends a signal to the DME to determine the amount of fuel. Someone who is more knowledgable feel free to chime in here.

There is 1st generation Hot wire and then the improved Hot film.The idea is to put a platinum wire or film on a ceramic substrate , in the air flow.
The wire/film is heated by a current . The air flow cools the wire/film which is then further heated by increasing the current to bring the temp back to the starting point. The current is monitored to give the DME signal.
The 2nd generation Hot film sensors ( 996 etc ) measure air flow in both directions by incorparating baffling around the sensor ,to get closer to true motor air flow.
Pretty well, for each system a sensor is a sensor. The air flow( mass ) rating comes from the size of the tube the sensor is in .

Thanks for your knowledgeable reply, you wouldn't happen to be the Geoff Everett who developed the "film star" would you? I see from your home page that you sell a similar product in the States. Could be some business coming your way-is it still as expensive?
