Post Tranny/Swepco/Mobil 1

I'm not sure if this would have helped poor Eddie 911 stave off his drinking problem, but here is my personal experience:

Any car I get, I service immediately, which includes a change in transmission lube. In the past, with the older transmissions, I swear by Swepco.

Well when I got my 964, I of course changed to Swepco for the tranny and front Diff. Afterward, car shifted "OK". Then I heard that the newer G-50 tranny likes synthetic, so I sez "what the hell, why not?"

First I got things good & hot, BTW, first time I changed it, I loosened the fill plug FIRST. It required a 1/2" breaker bar and a cheater bar to get it loose. I don't know what kind of gorrilla put it in. Anyhow, no sense in dumping out the old lube if, alas, you cannot put in new!

When I changed to Mobil-1 gear lube, just for good measure I put in about 5oz of Energy Release. Also I suggest you drain while hot, overnight, in a well ventillated space, because the Original lube STINKS to high heaven.

I believe that synthetic won't work well in the older trannies because it is just too slippery for the primitive synchros- I had some gear clash on my 930. Completely different story with the G-50. The shifts are noticebly better. I think this stuff will also protect the bearings better, but that's just a guess.

Please advise what is "Energy Release"?
I have a 93 Tip, do you think that a change of oil will give me better (smoother) shifts?
I was thinking of putting in some oil additive like "ProGold" you can see that stuff at:
www.progoldmfr.com
It's supposed to substantially reduce friction like Slick 50, but without the solids (teflon or ptfe). Do you think this is advisable?
I know what you mean when you have to undo a bolt for the first time and someone like the incredible hulk has tightened it before. One time I had to take my vehicle to the shop because a bolt was done up so tight.

Horst,

You hit the proverbial nail on the head. Swepco in 915's and Mobil 1 in G50's. Redline makes some good oils too, but Swepco and Mobil 1 seem to generally be the lubes of choice.

I agree that Mobil 1 is very good and I use this in the 964. However I have also found that Castrol GTX full synthetic transmission fluid is also very good. We used this in the 944 and it made a world of difference to the transmission,

Stephen: I am not connected in any way with the Energy Release thing- want to say that first off. However the local marketer is O'Reilly's, and the local distributer is a fellow pcae'r. I generally oppose additives- most are mouse milk, and a waste of money. However, I have personally seen the shippment boxes addressed to the NASCAR race teams. Other anecdotal experience is a friend who owns a large body shop had the main A/C compressor in his shop lock up. Just for the hell of it before scrapping the piece he added a few ounces of the stuff to the compressor, and it has run fine for the past three years. This stuff is not a lubricant per se, and is a clear gooey liquid. Will cure hair loss, cancer, impotence, etc I put it in the bearings of any motor, such as the a/c, rear fan, etc if I have to replace with new. Don't really know if it does any good, but have never had any problems on account of using it..

Just an $.02 from me. I have done the experiment going from factory fill to Swepco then to Mobil 1 in my G50 and the car certainly shifts best with Mobil 1.

Going from a "regular" gear lube (Kendall I think) to Swepco definitely made my 915 box shift better. I did not try Mobil 1 in this box.

And,just for cheers, Redline synthetic improved the shift in my Acura, particularly when gearbox cold.

I'll echo the above as well.

My shop advised that Swepco works well in the 915, but is definitely not the lube of choice for the G50 due to the cone style synchros.

I've used both Mobil 1 and a standard Castrol gear lube, and couldn't tell much difference between the two.

Horst;

You are amazing. I have been using Energy Release for 6 years. I use it in all my engines as well. I would be a little cautious to use it with a limited slip, the limit might be deleted. Basically ER is clorinated parifin, with some anti-corrosion agents in it. Awesome snake oil.

Mr. Smith:

In your Tiptronic use Exxon ATF LT 7141 (999 917 547 00). Do not use any of the additives.

Which Mobil 1 weight do you guy's recommend for G50 tranny? 75w90? Also, where to buy this stuff? Have a hard time finding this stuff. Current tranny fluid is Swepco.

BTY, car is a 993 and climate is mild (SF Bay Area).

Cheers!

Kevin: you are correct, I should have cautioned about ER in LSD

Oleg: yes, 75-90 Mobil-1 is the right stuff. I got it at Pep Boys, along with the syntehtic Mobil-1 grease I use to pack my CV joints and to lube my M-1 rifles!

Guys,
Please check your owners manuals for the specifications of oils to be used on your specific 911. They are subject to change and the odd mistake is made and it can get "Very" expensive,
