Default Alignment & corner balancing.

I have not had my car aligned and corner balanced since I bought it last year. I'm thinking this would be a good thing to do before continuing my auto-x adventure. I know the alignment is important, but is the corner balancing worth the extra investment? It seems to add quite a bit to the cost of the job.

I've also asked them to set the car up a little more agressively so it's livlier in the turns. I figure that's primarily giving the car a little more negative camber. What is a good camber setting for making the car a little more agressive without sacrificing street drivability?

Corner balance is to balance all 4 corners of the car to obtain optimum weight distribution. The adjustments on stock setup are very limited. I believe the most you can dial in are the Euro RS specs. (listed in Adrian's book). Are you encountering strange steering behaviors? or abnormal tire wears? If none, then I would recommend leaving them alone until you replace/upgrade your suspensions.

For alignment, lowering using the stock threaded collars, and corner balancing, he quoted me about $600 this morning. That seems like a lot to me, but maybe it's worth it if they need to spend a lot of hours and I get a car that is much better for auto-x at the end. If I don't yield any appreciable benefit, then that's obviously a lot of $$ to spend.

Is the corner balance weighting adjusted with the threaded collars or by some other mechanism?

Yep, on a 964 that's how it works!

Ok, thanks, that is very good information and basiclaly what I was figuring.

The more I think about it, the more I don't think it's worth doing now. Why waste the $$ for a second or two in the final auto-x days of the season when I'm going to have it all torn apart and redone over the winter anyway. Better to just wait until the new suspension is on and have it done in the spring I think.

Where are you having it done? Have you had TPC (no affiliation) in MD check out the car or give you a quote?

I have not gotten a quote from TPC yet, but I've heard good things about them. Where are they located?

They're in Jessup near us IF you do please ask for Tom and let him know Ron referred you. If you want we can meet there and try and get a discount to get both done. I need to have mine done soon.

RedRS,

After re-doing the suspension this year, I had my 964 4 wheel aligned and corner balanced at a highly recommended shop here in Vancouver (a lot of experience with Porsche including the Carrera GT). The bill was $350 CDN or less than half of what you were quoted.

Good luck!

Since no one mentioned it - 1 deg neg camber is perfect for quick response for a 964 C2, lower it with Eibach springs and sport shocks and you're good to go!
Have Fun.

Does anyone know the weight distribution between front and rear wheels of 964 3.3 Turbo?
