You need to check the part number. This is the only reliable way. The part number is on the inside of the wheel. I do not have the actual number handy right now but just post it and we can find if for you in short order.

Per information from an owner of the magnesium wheels, "An indicator is that the magnesium wheels say "magnesium" in the casting between 2 spokes, were made in Germany by Sett, as is probably your spare tire wheel. If you look at your spare you will see the Sett emblem cast into the wheel, the Mags also have the same thing cast into another space between spokes." As Adrian mentioned a part number would help to identify the wheels.
Where the rims joint the spokes they have stamped "SM made in italy" & "Magnesium" also stamped on the front face is the rim width and offset. 55 offset front and rear 7.5J front 9J rear
The other sure sign is a scratched face where they have been dropped and paint flaking off!!!!
They are so valuable and rare now, personally I wouldn't use them (keep them safely stored), 17" 993 Cups are a good alternative (correct 55 offset)
Hi George
Have you got any idea how much the 993 cup rims are? I have got a 964 RS with immaculate mag rims on, and would prefer to keep them that way!

C2RS, I have some 993 Cup 'Twist'wheels, offset 55 front and rear 7x9J. These are OEM and cost £450+VAT (they came off a Boxter S originally but were basically new). I think I purchased them at www.porscheshop.co.uk

If you are lucky you should be able to get a set of 17" 993 cups in the UK for about £500 with reasonable tyres, and I would really recommend fitting them, plus when you sell the car you will always get your money back, I have sold mine with two sets of wheels.

To be really sad I will try and take some close up photo's this weekend of a mag cup wheel (with all the identifying features), there was only one type fitted to the 964RS and that was the cup 1 style but from the posts above perhaps there was more than one supplier (Adrian can you clarify this?)

Received updated information on RS magnesium markings, that:
1. By the valve stem "9JX17 (Valve stem between) ET55"
2. If valve stem is at 12:00 then in the interval between spokes at 5:00 it
says: "Made by SM"
3 In the 7:00 space it says: "magnesium"

9.5x17 965.362.128.05
if you need the type II #s let me know

Rob,
How do you know those part numbers are magnesium wheels? In the Porsche parts catalog, 965.362.126.01 shows as an aluminum alloy 17" wheel used with option M403 (cast 17" wheel) and on Turbo look 964's. 965.362.128.05 shows as aluminum alloy on Turbo look and Turbo's.
On the euro 964 RS the only cast magnesium rims I have ever seen have been the cup 1 style which were of a similar design to the 3.3 964 Turbo.
Bill is absolutley correct as he states above, these wheels are easy to identify

I have never seen 993 cup 2 style 17" cast mag wheels, I believe that all 993 RS cars were supplied standard with 18" split rim Speedline magnesium wheels.
I understand that the only other cast mag wheel used on the 964 was the design 90 style used on the Carrera 4RS which was produced in very limited numbers.
