Default Phew . . .

Had my mechanic come over on saturday to check over my car and see why i was getting the oil light come on at idle and a tapping noise under acceleration.
Turns out my oil gauge is reading higher than it should. The car was low on oil by about a litre and a bit - i did check the dip-stick a couple of times, but i must have miss-read it. We put 2 litres in and the pressure came up to about 0.7/0.8 on the gauge. We then took the top off the secondary dizzy and the rotor arm would move freely so the belt has gone causing the pinking i heard. I'd never heard pinking before so i couldn't identify it. So i've ordered 2 caps, 2 rotors and a belt (£107.51). Should be back to normal soon

Great news Greg! Are you going to replace the dizzy belt yourself?

It is great news isnt it !
I'm actually gonna do it with Chris my mechanic - he's ordered the parts as he gets a trade deal. He lives nextdoor to a nice country pub too

Greg

Is this the same problem you described in an earlier thread (i.e. Oil pressure drops to zero at idle ) where you go on to say that after replacing an oil line you noticed a change in oil pressure or a lack thereof? If so, it would have been better to continue the thread for others in the future who experience this same problem. But I don't think it is the same problem cause you say the guage is reading hi in this thread as oppose to low in the other thread. Being low on oil could give a low reading but with just over a liter low I'm not sure. The dipstick I believe has a range of 1.7 liters from min to max and I've been down a liter before in my car and havn't noticed a low oil pressure reading so I'm wondering if the broken belt may have had something to do with it. Anyways, glad to hear a costly repair was averted!
