Where's the problem with the RS (LW) flywheel
#31
Thank you for your thoughts on this matter, Adrian. If it could be done cleanly, I would actually like to remove the air conditioning unit to save weight anyway. There is no reason to have air conditioning in the Northwest US in my book. It rarely gets cold enough around here to need the heater blower as well. If/When it is, I'm driving the oher car anyway.
Thanks
Jon

Adrian, how much lighter do you think the -89 C4 flywheel is compared to the DMF? Is it somewhere in the middle between the DMF and the RS? It sounds like an interesting way to go if it works.

I've got the LWF, but also the TPC Supercharger kit. The only problem I get is when the engine is cold - the engine will stall if come to a stop quickly. Once warm though it is fine, certainly had no problem on the track either. It is interesting in traffic, but you do get used to it.

jon, I've recently posted a thread enquiring about retro-fitting aircon. There must be a deal in there somewhere, my LWF for your aircon system maybe....
Sounds like if I did retro-fit aircon, I might negate the advantages of my LWF.

You want my aircon? If there is a way to get the stuff out of the car cleanly without leaving a gaping hole in my dash or having the wiper washer come on when I turn on the radio I would be open to a deal! :-)

Dear Jon,
These are the approximate weights;
DMF 30 lbs (F)
DMF 32 lbs (LUK)
SMF 19 lbs (89 C4)
LWF 12 lbs (964 RS)
Ciao,
Adrian

PS: You should also be aware that the 89 C4 used a different flywheel speed sensor. You can use the new ones (so I am told) but you have to re-adjust the gap to 0.8 mm instead of 1 mm. This is to ensure a good signal strength.

Thanks Adrian. Thomas raises an interesting point. Especially considering respectable folks like Andial sell a LWF with mass added back on to arrive at a total weight of 19 lbs~ coincidence? Perhaps one would do well to seek out a 89' C4 flywheel and make the mod Adrian has suggested.

yes I agree Jon, it looks like the "perfect" middle way. But I've never heard of if it as an option to do. And I've never seen a thread on this forum from anyone who's done it. Makes you wonder if this mod has been to obvious to us all.....is there anybody out there who has done this?

Dear Jon,
If you install the 1989 C4 flywheel system you will also have to change the clutch assy. The starter ring gear for the SMF is mounted to the pressure plate.
The 89 C4 system is completely transplantable to the 1990s and up. The rest of the transmission is the same. I thought about the flywheel sensor and I reckon it should be okay left alone based on the tolerance. Just remember that it may need to be gapped closer.
The Andial version is basically the same. In the end I would make the decision on availability and price.
