i am contemplating using simple green and the groit's engine cleaner on mine (i am in the same boat as you with an engine any tranny sitting on a pallet in the garage right now, just waiting on the car to get back.
you will need to waterproof all the electrical connectors before starting of course.

After covering parts that do not like water, I spray engine area P21 car wash. Let it soak in a bit and scrub / wash with towel and small brush. Rinse with water (soft spray, like garden sprayer) and do again. For troubled areas I use Wurth citrix degreaser.

I use OrangeBlast. I spray it on and let it soak. Then rinse off. For tough areas, I will repeat and scrub with a toothbrush.

I've used SimpleGreen and it works well too. I prefer the smell of OrangeBlast better. The pricing and effectiveness are basically the same.

Autoglym road tar remover and a brush, then spray with detergent, then power wash down without covering anything.
I've been doing this for years, and only once or twice on any of my cars have they failed to start first time.....
I then spray with Zymol vinyl cleaner for a nice protective shine....

I always figure if it is apart go a head and clean it. I found the Simple Green product really cleans up the parts well. I used a bunch of kitchen brushes. Good luck and post some shots before and after. We love pictures...

i'll post some pictures when i start working on it (don't expect them soon ) also of the Tranny while it's out as well.
we repainted the front bumper - so as soon as that is done the car will finally lead Va. (and the body shop) for it's return to Wa. 2 years later (almost to the month) it's fixed - Yeah!!!
Now the fun part of putting it all back together starts.

ITC - thanks i took that just prior to 03' one lap when the car was going through final setup at G&W. Too bad we forgot the turbo's or we might have had a chance.
