Post Changing Transmission Fluid: Procedure

Just replaced my transmission fluid. There is a writeup on how to do this at Robin's 993 site at http://p-car.com/diy/transmissionfluid/. Of particular note, the clear vinyl tubing to get the new oil in worked well - no mess, no fuss. Purchased hose at local hardware store.

Bill,
What type/brand of tranmission fluid did you finally
settle on ? Did it change the feel of your tranny ?

I put Mobil 1 75W90 in it. Don't know what was in it before, however, driving this morning the shifts felt a little bit lighter/crisper.

Hi,
I had mine replaced at the service last week. I can't actually feel any difference but then I guess I couldn't feel a problem with it before.

I really HATE doing this, starting another "which oil" discussion - - - but . . . . .
-
I took our new 964 in today for a major service and to have the brakes flushed and the transmission oil changed. I specified Mobil One for the transmission. I mentioned to my mechanic that I read on this board that Mobil One is the preferred tranny oil for the G-50s. He said that was strange because from all their investigations, including a long discussion with a Mobil One rep, Mobil One is not the best oil for the G-50. In fact, Mobil One does not have some of the additives that are compatible with the syncros in the G-50 - that statement from the Mobil One rep. He recommended Amsoil for street and Sweepo (sp) for track - the latter is a bit heavier. He did note that Mobil One might have recently changed its transmission oil formulation and he was not aware of it. I opted for the Amsoil.
-
By the way, the mechanic is Stan Fox, who, with his partner, Bill Hagy, own and operate RPM in Newington, VA. Both are well respected mechanics and noted racers. Both have outstanding reputations in the Porsche community in the greater WashDC area.

I heard the same thing as scupper from my mechanic today... he recommends Amsoil instead of Mobile 1. I'm having the transmission fluid replaced in about 2 hours, so I'll fill y'all in with the results.

Mobil 1 is a GL5-rated oil (Porsche requirement), and has been the oil of choice for G50's for awhile now. While I can't speak about Amsoil from first hand experience, the sense I have is that they've got a pretty good product, in addition to others.

And I agree - my intention in posting was not to get into a this-oil-is-better-than-that-oil discussion, rather to let the forum know of a good procedure that I thought worked pretty well.

I changed the gearbox & diff oil in my 1990 C4 following the same guide as Bill (real sense of achievement!) and used Swepco gear oil.

Gearbox is sweeter to use at all times (less of a struggle when cold & much slicker when warm) although some of that could be psychological?!!
