Some questions from the trunk
Folks,
Any one out there help out with a couple of questions ??? I spent this weekend in the trunk - thought I would clean it up a little before the winter really hits. The weekend prompted 2 questions.
Does anyone know where this wire is supposed to be attached (Top left cornor of picture) ????
Also, I have a hole under my battery unfortunately - not too big at the moment, but anyone got any ideas on the best way to deal with it ????

I have used in the past a fiberglass resin from a company called "Davids" called P40. I am from the UK and have used it there, but live in the States now and have not seen it any where here. I am thinking of having a friend send me some, however I am worried that this may be a bigger problem than a quick fiver glass fix ??? Is this problem more terminal ?
Any help would be fantastic
Thanks everyone,
Andy

Andy;
In regards to your hole in your pan, I would first put baking powder on the battery tray to neutralize the acid and stop the corrosion. I would not waste the time to do a quick fix. I would take it to a good welding shop or body shop and weld the hole or holes, you might have more damage than you think. Take a scatch awe or punch and feel the steel around the hole. Weld it and treat the area with Rust Mort or Navel Jelley. Good luck

There is also a product I got from Girots garage which seems totally impervious to everything which you could use to seal the newly welded in patch (I agree with patrick, that is the best way to deal with the hole- fiberglass is at best a temporary solution)

Hi,
I had the same problem under the battery with corrosion, although it wasn't holed.
I found in the end that it wasn't being caused by the battery alone, it accelerated by water from the intense cleaning solution bottle overflowing down onto the battery area ( a fault in the one way return valve).
I also think that a non factory battery (without a vent) contributed.
I treated it with rust kill several times and then primed it with rust inhibitor.
Wonder how many other people have this prob?

Dear Ade,
That is interesting. My intensive cleaning bottle is on the other side of the trunk. Above the PDAS/ABS control unit which suffers from corrosion caused by what is sitting above it.
My fluid bottle is directly above theotems shown in the posted photograph. I always make sure this container is empty in winter because if overflows when it freezes. I use mine as a back up filled with normal cleaning fluid. That silicon rubbish was dumped a long time ago.
Ciao,
Adrian

Folks,
Thanks for the advise on the hole and wire.
I think my hole was actually caused by the front of the car grounding out on a parking kirb (obviously before I owned the car :-), scruffing off the plastic sealant - my hole looks like it started from the outside in.
I have applied several goats of rust stopper and have the car in for an estimate today - I'll let you know how it works out.
If any one else could confirm if the wire is for the telephone option it would be graetly appreciated. When I purchased the car last year, it did have a large 80's style phone in the car that I asked the garage to remove before I picked the car up - it seems plausable to me, however loose wires are always a little disconcerning.
Anyone know any good body shops in the white plains area of NY ??
Thanks Again,
Andy

Andy I just had a look at my car, and don't see anything like this connector. When I bought my car, it, too, had an aftermarket fixed telephone, which I ripped out by the roots. Nothing went to the trunk. Could this perhaps be the remnants of a CD changer? Can you contact the previous owner and ask him/her?

In a related Tale From The Trunk - any thoughts on neutralizing/removing battery acid residue from the carpeting up front? It looks OK, but has a nasty feel to it. The acid ate away the stitching holding the binding around the edge of the carpet. I have a guy to re-bind the carpet, but it needs to be clean first. Any clues? Perhaps a baking soda bath?
Thanks!
