Post 964 RSA Tail

Does anyone know where to get a good price on a 964 RSA Tail?

Also has anyone used fiberglass repros? And if yes do they in fact have cracking problems.

I am not sure if this is a good price but I saw one for sale at RSAmerica.net. The seller is asking $850.

I had an MA Shaw fiberglass tail on my SC for 4 years, never painted it (black tail on white body, looked fine), and no cracks. I plan to get one for my C2 from Shaw also (but will paint it this time). Fits right into the existing opening in the deck lid. Around $450.

One cost of the factory RSA tail is the weight. I am installing one on my car this week (I hope) and the whole decklid tail combo weighs 36 pounds The wing alone weighs 23 pounds, so the lid weighs 13 pounds. The M.A.Shaw tail Bill Gregory has only weighs around 15 pounds or 28 pounds with lid. Another thing too is the RSA tail requires either new hinges or a bracket to be fabricated to attach the lid to standard C2 hinges. This bracket is a simple project and if you look at an RSA you will discover that is all that Porsche did, so cheaper to make a bracket from some angled alloy. The hinges cost $125 each list if you want the real thing. I paid $975 for my wing which is very nice and same color as my car.

I would certainly go for the MA Shaw RSA one-piece fiberglass tail, it's only $450 and it fits like a glove. The conversion to an actual RSA tail does require some handywork, a hinge conversion/fabrication and the addition of a heavy, expensive piece...just my opinion.

Here's a pic:

Here's another suggestion...now that you have provided a means for downforce, and looks for the rear - why not compliment the front with some downforce and have that "upgraded" look to boot?

Here's another pic:

The front splitter goes for $275, from MA Shaw as well...it required very little "touching up" prior to painting, the tail required a fair amount of work before spraying.

I'm not affiliated with MA Shaw in any way, just am very happy with the finished product...I feel I have achieved the look and function I was hoping for.

Boris

Interested that you want to fit a whale tail on to a 964, is it for looks or do you track the car.

Here in the UK a lot of 3.2 Carrera owners are having their rear spoilers removed as many prefer a less cluttered look.

Personally I prefer the 964 with the electric spoiler, the classic 911 profile is unspoilt and I love the reaction in the mirror from following cars when it raises and lowers automatically

I actually preferr the wingless look, however I think the aerodynamics are better with the RSA tail or other wing. I think this is particularly true if you have removed the engine belly pan, which has a diffuser built into it i.e. the angled up section just aft of the engine.

Frere's book goes into the difference beween the various 911 spoilers and body shapes in detail but does not go into the aerodynamic effects of differing USA, European and Carrera Cup ride heights.

The stock 964 is actually the best shape of any air-cooled Porsche considering CD and frontal area as well as lift numbers. At 150 MPH it has a slight downforce of around 10 pounds created at the front and a slight lift of around 22 pounds at the rear. Frere claims the motorized spoiler shape is not as efficient as a wing spoiler and that the 964's good numbers are achieved because of the diffuser and smooth 964 underbody.

The Carrera Cup race cars removed the engine belly pan and the cars seemed to handle just fine, however the cars were set about 3 inches lower than standard height and 1 inch or so lower than RS height and this can make a lot of difference in aerodynamic characteristics. I think the motorized wing is probably about as efficient as the original 1972 RS "Ducktail" which produced a rear lift reduction from 320 pounds down to 93 pounds at 152 MPH. I therefore suspect removing the belly pan puts the rear lift somewhere between 22 with and 93 pounds without, giving some credit to the other underbody enhancements of the 964 chassis. A car without the belly pan would still be very stable, similar to a '72 RS, probably better.

The early 3 liter Turbo "Tray" style (not the larger 3.3 liter Turbo) spoiler which is similar to the RSA wing produced a lift reduction down to approximately 28 pounds compared to the Ducktail's 93 pounds. So my bet is with the RSA spoiler and the engine belly pan, a lowered 964 may produce actual downforce front and rear and if you track the car a significant gain in stability and cornering grip can be gained. This particularly if you chose to eliminate the overheating effects of the engine belly pan and it's diffuser section. I think people who have installed a wing report improved stability during braking from high speeds.

I do prefer the look with the RSA tail. I think the turbo tail is too big unless you have the turbo flares to go with it. Although I do autocross and I'm now getting into timetrial'ing as well, so I'm doing it for both!
