Mac,
The best advice is to relax, listen to your instructor, don't try to prove anything about you or your 964, and most important, enjoy it!.
Our PCA region has an online publication that has some good novice information. Choose the 'CVR Drivers Education Guide' at http://www.cvrpca.org/n_cvrdetracks.htm

there's a track day article in either last month's or the month before's issue of 911 and Prosche world. Can't remember which, right now.
Anyway, helmet, cotton clothing, clean out the clutter, oil etc.
And for the first time or more, don't conentrate on going fast as much as working on driving clean -- shifts, braking and hitting the line will lead to fast times better than
"trying-to-drive-fast."
Face it, you own a Porsche so you probably already think you're a good/great driver, but there's a lot more going on with track driving than road driving.

Hi,
I just went to my first DE. While it lasted, it was ahoot.
Be sure to check out your car real carefully. Be very critical of things like oil leaks, unusual sounds etc.
I was black flagged for a large blue cloud that turned out to be a failed gasket in my oil tank. Ended my day on the second run. Sigh
Most of all, have fun!!
Best of luck.

Mac,
BRAKES, BRAKES, BRAKES! Check your pads, renew your brakefluid, brakelines and tyres (look for nails and screws that might be there un-noticed = slow puncture). You should also buy yourslef a tyre pressure gauge so that you can contiously keep monitoring the tyre pressure before and after your "runs". It will fluctuate depending on tyre temp.
Get rid of all loose items that you might keep in the car.
Racing shoes, gloves are nice to have but a good helmet is a minimum.
Keep your head cool and don't let those horns grow out from your forehead!
Ciao,
Johannes

The priorities are:
1. Come home with the car intact or you can't succeed with priority #2.
2. Have fun so you want to do it again.
To succeed, you want to keep the car on the track, and don't break it, a mindset somewhat different from those who tow their track car.
So, concentrate on smoothness, learning the line, and gradual improvement. Can't emphasize checking the oil enough. You'll feel really stupid if you run low.
Not everyone is a "natural" (I'm not), and you really can't keep up with some guys who are just gifted. So just work on making yourself better, and Porsche's are great at encouraging that, since improvement in driving is rewarded by the car.
Have fun! AS
