Question 5 point harness

Has anyone installed a 5point harness in a 964 cab without the use of a roll/harness bar. I'm trying to figure out if I can use the stock rear seatbelt points as mount points for the shoulder straps and the stock front seat belt points for the lap belts. I'm trying to avoid drilling any holes in the car. I do however understand that for the submarine belt I will have to drill a hole.

If anyone has done this I would appreciate hearing what equipment & challenges you faced and any special tricks you came by.

Thanks,

Boris

Boris, you can have five point harnesses in your car without a harness bar/roll bar...but they will NOT be at a proper angle, nor will there be adequate support if using factory seats.

The function of the harness guide bar is to guide the shoulder straps through the holes in a racing/sport seat at the correct angle to prevent compression during an incident...it also does a fair job of keeping the harness in a good position when using factory seats without shoulder strap holes.

Most all harness guide bars do not require any drilling, I suggest getting one...seriously. As a matter of fact, I have never seen on that does require drilling.

You will be able to mount your shoulder straps at the rear seatbelt mounting points, just get a set of eyelets from the place you're ordering your harnesses through, I use OG Racing here in Va. - they are VERY familiar with this setup.

I can save you a few dollars on mounting your lap belts as I have the Brey Krause inner belt stainless eyelets...go to www.bkauto.com - they have products that are specific to mounting harnesses in a 964/993 and 996. I no longer use this kit, so it's for sale.

As always, I have plenty of pics I can provide, all you gotta do is ask.

I've been looking for an inexpensive harness bar for a 91 964 cab, but haven't found one. Has anyone ever seen one?

Check out Stable Energies. They have a harness bar for $99. I have one in my 90 C4 Cab and have been happy.

Also, if you use a 6 point harness then the sub-strap is V shaped and mounts using the bolts that hold down the front of the seat rails, thus no new holes. Depending on where you are planning to run this may or may not be legal though.

It's important to reiterate that you should never use harnesses without a rollbar or harness bar, as compression injuries (as Jeff points out) can occur. If you showed up for a tech inspection with harnesses without a rollbar/harness bar, you wouldn't pass. In addition, in our PCA region, if you have harnesses without seats made to accomodate them, you'd fail tech also (you'd drive without them). We don't allow harnesses on stock seats, as they can slide off your shoulders. There are many seats (I use Recaro SRD's) that have holes in the seat by the shoulders that the harness's pass through. I know one person in a 993 who had a hole, ala SRD's, put in his stock seats for $150.

NO, I did not have to drill any holes.

FWIW, in the San Diego PCA region harnesses with stock seats are allowed (for AutoX not for time trial or DE) as long as the shoulder harness is an "H" strap, this keeps the two shoulder straps from being able to separate. Alternatively, you can use a seat halo. this is a strap that goes around the seat back top and has loops for the shuolder straps to pass thru.

No, I'm just selling the Brey Kraus brackets for the "tunnel side" of both seats. They attach to the factory seats, where the original seat belt bolt goes in.

The only advantage to this is that it provides an attachment for your lap belts (harness) while retaining your original seat belt receiver.

There is one offered for the "outer" attachments as well...I have retained the use of those for the moment.

www.bkauto.com will provide some decent pics and a good explanation what the seat belt mount kits do.

Otherwise, email me personally...so I will have a direct reminder to send you some pics...I'm at work right now.

Thanks Jeff,

I was thinking of the whole think.

Some day, I'll install harness guide (or the thing where you can attach the harness) & all other bits & pieces that are needed.
