Question What's that extra sound at 6,000 rpm?

Yes, I know, Joey and his rpm's again.

So here goes. During my recent track weekend, I noticed an extra level of sound as the tach broke 6,000 rpm's. The only time I had heard this blare was during an RSA test drive with Lefty. As he mashed the pedal, we looked at each other and wondered why the induction noise "popped" a little louder when breaking 6,000.

I had never heard that sound, or recalled it, coming from my car until this past weekend. Maybe I had been shifting sooner all along or simply hadn't noticed, but after noticing it the first time, I realized it was consistent. FWIW, I've drilled the airbox and installed a cup pipe, so your experience may vary. I'm just wondering if there's anything here to be concerned with?

Joey, you should hear about TWO of those sounds, one is around 4k, the other around 6k. I noticed that upon purchasing my 964 as well.

The only thing I can attribute it to is the programmed curves for timing in the factory computer...wonder if it's more prominent with an upgrade chip??

My friend, who owns a local P-Car repair/upgrade facility in the area says he's always noticed that in the 964 series.

Seems it's a good sign? When I hear that second "upbeat" in sound - I hold on!

Around 5800rpm, the resonance flap in the induction system opens.
You will notice a change in noise, especially if you're on full throttle.
Oh, and it IS more pronounced if you have a performance chip (well it is with mine, at least).

Oh, isn't that the truth. Well, no one told me this was going to be cheap, but it sure beats a round of golf.
Thanks, all, for the information. <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />
