Default 996 4 pots on a 964

Hi Chaps,

Just wondering if it is possible to put 996 brembo's on a 964? Is it a direct fit or is there loads of messing about??

Cheers

I have never heard of this before so although I am not sure what the specific issues are I would say its not really feasible.

Sunil,

What's wrong with the brakes you've got already? Are you planning to track it a lot?

Nope, no tracking... Just wanted to make the car look better when I finally get it back from Addspeed.

I do need to sort the rear pads out so thought I'd go the whole hog.

Question

I saw some mention of Boxster calipers being used. Does anyone have any experience of fitting them on a C4?? Ideally the Boxster S calipers would be a better bet if they fit. If they DO fit, can they be used with the standard rotors or are larger rotors required??

I've got to have my calipers refurbished sometime soon and I'd probably take the opportunity to repaint them (red, of course) but it seems that it may be better to invest the money in a set of new Boxster calipers - providing the fitting is relatively straight forward.

All suggestions welcome.

Regards

Dave

Paint'em. Looks good and is cheap if cosmetics is all you're after.

Dave,
If you're interested I've got a set of 964 front calipers sitting on my shelf recently taken off my C2 when I fitted my 993 calipers. They are in pretty good shape and I suspect you could get away without re-building them, however, if you are having them painted you may as well rebuild them anyway.
Above all it would mean not having to take the car off the road to have the refurb done. Let me know if they're of interest to you.

The Boxster S and 996 calipers should be the same size/spec. If I were to go big, I'd skip the 993 calipers and go to either big reds or turbo brakes.

The Boxster "Monoblock" caliper conversion for the front of a 964 requires adapters and a few other items, the calipers wind up being mounted upside down if I remember correctly, so you have to remove them to bleed.

What a pain!

I know that 996 calipers require adapters as well, trick is finding the adapters for 996 to 964...I'm not sure the adapters used for a Big Red conversion are the same??

FWIW, a Big Red conversion has become so simple, with adapters and hardware, that's all.

A buddy of mine has a set of 997 calipers that I may try and mess around with someday, just to see if they fit and how they look, they are black though...he upgraded to the 997"S" calipers, that was quite a job for us!

Hey Christer, good to see you still "haunt" the forum.

I am around from time to time but work demands and other issues keep me from hanging about much. I try to chime in now and then, especially when I need help!

WHERE have I been? With TWO racecars, I seem to travel a lot, so I'm all over the place. Think I'm going to put the Toyota up for sale after getting ANOTHER new motor ran-in. I spent all Winter building a viscious 200+ HP 4cyl. and blew it up in two laps. ...machine shop error coupled with my NOT SO sharp eye. - That hurt.

Yeah, I "slip" every now and then.

The Porsche continues to run like a scalded dog, so my racing efforts may be a bit more concentrated towards the P-Car, I dunno.
