Post Windscreen/windshield bonding

Has anyone fitted a new screen without bonding it? The reason I ask is that I believe that the bonding is to do with the screen supporting the air bags (which I don't have) and the roads here are so bad that I shall probably need a new screen again in the not to distant future. Bonding means that the seal will be destroyed when removing the old screen and I would prefer to save this cost if possible.

I posted this first on the 911 forum just incase anyone had fitted a 964 screen/seal to their pre '89 911.

Thanks,
Pete

Don't quite understand where airbags come in to the equation. However, my pre-airbag 964 has just had a new screen, and it is quite a simple replacement job, using the original rubber seal. Main worries are radio aerial (disconnects behind clock on my RHD) and removing RV Mirror without breaking it.

As far as I know, bonded 'screens weren't used until later (?996)

Pete;

Porsche used urathane in our 964's. With or without the airbag, Urethane will and can save lives. Urethane the glass in and save up till the next windshield to replace the rubber. A side note, the urethane will stiffen up the front A-pillars.

Thanks both for the replies.

As I understand it the screen must be bonded by some method when using air bags otherwise in an accident if the screen pops out there could be nothing to support the airbags as the driver/passenger hits them. Both would be free to pass through the screen opening.

My screen appears to be bonded with polyurethane but as well as saving the cost of a seal my thoughts were that without airbags I would rather bang my head on a screen that popped out(deformable structure) in an accident rather than hit it on a sold object (bonded screen).

Dear Pete,
The 964 screen and seal can be used for earlier models. You must use the 964 seal.
Install and seal (which means using sealant) in accordance with the 964 manual requirements. The only difference between airbags and not airbags in regard to the windscreen is the cure time of the seal. Without airbags you can drive away immediately with airbags you have to let the seal cure. The only reason for this is that if the airbag happens to go off and the seal is not hard the windshield may get blown out. Purely a liability issue. I always recommend you allow the seal to cure (go off) before you drive away.
Ciao,
Adrian

Hi Johnny G

I see you've finally had you screen replaced, did you go to Autoglas or an OPC in the end???

Was the job done to your satisfaction??

Cheers

Interesting that you ask Johnny G where he had his screen replaced and whether it was satisfactory. This gets me on to the reason that I am replacing my 964 screen myself and my big rant about all car dealers. Maybe I am fussy or just unlucky but I have never had any work by any car dealer done satisfactorily.

Keeping to the subject in hand. I had the screen on my 911 SC replaced on 2 occasions by my local OPC. The first time they gave the car back with plastic covers still on the seats. This was to hide the fact that not only the headlining, dashboard and carpets had sealant on them but so had the seats! The second time they managed to damage the headlining. On the third occasion I decided to have a go myself. One hour job, no mess,no leaks, no pain. Well one hour excluding the time it took to repair the damage to the paint work that the OPC had caused.

Later I also found out that the OPC charged £450 just for the new screen when AutoGlass charged £100. Also the OPC employed AutoGlass to do the work!

End of rant.

Hi Pete,
This sounds "normal" (that's the bad service!!) About 3 weeks to a month ago, Richard (who is also on the 964 forum and I both sent our cars to Autoglas to get new front screens.
As with you there were also small droplets of "grey sealer" on my steering wheel and gear ****, they broke my rear-view mirror (which they paid for (£40)). I knew an OPC would charge the earth and outsource the job so I sent it straight to Autoglas.
The problem is that no one has pride in their work anymore!!and just try and make a quick buck!!

Cheers
Gary'91 C2

PS. Are you going to Bramham Park???

Sorry for the delay in my reply.
I had a good experience with autoglass, even though it was on a dodgy industrial estate in the ****-end of Dundee: I guess it boils down to the individuals involved with the job.

My fitter was a classic car fan (XJS owner) and knew about the issues surrounding a 911 screen (aerial/RVM).
They were quick and were very flexible when it came to taking the car away to get the a-pillar rust repaired. The car had no damage or stray sealant when finished. Cost was £40 on the insurance excess.

Have a good time at Bramham - think of me at work all weekend!
