Post Need urgent some correct info pls

Fellow P-cars lovers,

I still drive the more or less ugly Design 90 wheels.

Ive got a chance to buy some original second hand Cup 1 wheels.

The seller tells me the fronts are 7 x 17" ... OK, but that the rears are 8 x 17", not 9 x 17.

Is this possible ? Do 8 x 17"s fit the rear ? Do they actually exist as rears ? What kind of tires do I put on these ?

They are offered at a decent price and it toke ages to find original second hand Cup 1s here in Europe. Should I avoid these or got for it ?

Thanks for your help,

WSP964

Off the top of my head, I can confirm that the RS America had 7 and 8 wheel widths. I believe they are the same wheels as the 91-92 Turbo.

So, yes, original wheels do come in those widths. Ask the seller to provide the Porsche Part Numbers which are stamped on the inside of the wheels. They should read 964.---.---.---. something to that affect.

Thanks Joey,

in that case, did they only came in a chrome finish or in the more usual alloy finish ?

Thanks again ..

The RSA comes stock with 5 spoke cup wheels in 7 and 8 widths. These rims are identical in look to the turbo rims except the turbo rims are 7 and 9.

You can verify all of the information on the rims on the RSA website:

<a href="http://www.rsamerica.net" target="_blank">www.rsamerica.net</a>

The sizes, offsets and part numbers are listed.

The rims are standard issue in silver painted finish.

All will fit on a 964.

Extreme care should be taken to verify that the RR wheel and tire clears the oil line in the wheel well. This tube is slightly flattened from the factory.

Enjoy your new wheels!

One last tip. You can get the offset information off the FRONT of the wheels. Next to the valve stem you will find two numbers: one is the wheel width and the other is the offset. The offset numbers should be 55 (mm) for Factory wheels. 70mm offsets for rear wheels are 993 wheels which will not work on the 964, so pay extra attention to this detail.

Good luck!

In Europe the 7+8x 17 was av. as Option from the Factory from up 1992 on all 964 ,the 9 inch wheel was only av. on the 965 Turbo and 964 Turbolook .
If you want 7+9 Cup I send me a message ,i have a set with Tires .

Suggest you stay far away from chrome wheels. I am not speaking of appearance, but structuaral integrity. Hope I am not pissing off too many...

Last silly question pls ...

Is there a visible esthetical difference between rear 8Jx17 Cups or 19Jx17 Cups ?

Thanks,

Assuming both wheels have 55mm offsets and are wearing 255/40/17 tires, there will be slightly more tire bulge on the 8" wheels. As for the rims, the 9" wheels will extend 1/2" farther from the car.

It would be very difficult to tell the difference at a glance.
