Smile Just rolled it over...200,000 miles...

I reached 200,000 miles on the odometer this week. In looking back, I've had the car for 13 years and am really glad I purchased the 964. It continues to make me smile. I will post a photo when I figure out how.

The car is my daily driver. I recently moved from California to New Hampshire. Its sad that Porsche's are not very common as compared to California. These are great cars.

Big congrats! I am at 85k right now on my '90 C2. I can hardly stay out of it though so it is now my "unofficial" daily driver. The A6 now sits and collects dust and I actually want to sell it. If I stack up 15k miles a year for the next 7.5 years on the 964, hopefully I can hit that 200k mark too.

I'd die to see the 100k-200k service records to see what I may have coming.

Rob - Congratulations! Encouraging to hear - I'm at 114K and it's my daily driver as well. Just curious, since you've have it, what major services have you had done?

Harry - No, the engine has not been rebuilt nor resealed. It has a few minor oil drips but otherwise it running strong. I also have a minor drip on the front differential. My car was manufactured early in the 964 life (Feb 90) so I've had some of the well known problems but otherwise its been a great car.

This is my basic regiment for maintenance. All service is done by the dealer except I change my own brake pads and rotors. My local independent mechanics don't have a Bosch Hammer. I am running Mobile 1 15W50 oil, changed once a year. I removed the engine tray about 2 years ago.

I follow the factory maintenance schedule. Every two years, it gets a 30K mile service and in the off years, it gets the 15K mile service. During the 30K service, I also have the brake fluid and clutch lines flushed and bled.

In the course of my ownership, I have had the dual-mass flywheel fail at 60K miles. I replaced with the LUK and a new clutch. I'm still on that clutch. I had the distributor belt fail around 40K miles. I replaced and installed distributor vent, no more problems. I've had the ABS pump fail caused by a bad relay. I've also had the oil thermostat fail around 100K. I replaced my cabrio top in 1996. Its stiching was unraveling. The replacement top was an aftermarket and its holding up well.

I commute about 25 miles each way every day so most of my miles are highway. I know I will have to replace the clutch eventually.

My t'stat went (closed while driving, having opened) at about 120k miles and the guys in the shop said "Gee, I can't believe it, they never fail." Huh.

Darryl,

My dealer's mechanic said something very similar, that the thermostat's never fail. Interesting coincidence.

I forgot to mention that I have '91 C2 Cab.The auto cabrio top failed recently. I think it's the cables and/ or one of the motors - struts didn't break. I'm going to look into it myself and see if I can DIY it. I've changed pads and oils myself. Other than that, the car's been great.

Hello Rob,

Wow, 200.000 miles! That's great! Congratulations!
I hope my 964 which is also from the early 1990's will be as good as yours.
Thinking of ever replacing it?

Greetings,
Henrik

I hope I can say that some day. Just got my car about a month ago, and I have 72K on it now; got it with 69900 on it. 1150 was the trip home.

BTW- I love owning this car- it's the most fun I've had on 4 wheels.

Henrik,

Yes, I've thought about replacing the 964, especially when I think about cost of having the car repainted and rebuilding the engine. I ask myself, why should I spend $10-15K on a 15 year old car? You end up with a fresh, old car. I don't know what I will ultimately do. I've driven the 996's and don't like their disconnected feel. The car I've been interested in is a 993 C2S but I've never driven a 993.

How long do you intend on keeping your 964?

Hello Rob,

I bought my 964 a few years ago. So actually I already bought an old car from the start. I thought that I would keep it for the rest of my life but the running costs will be tremendous I think (engine rebuild, clutch). It did now about 160.000 KM’s so that is about 100.000 miles and I didn't have any major problems so far.
I would love to change it for a 964 RS or 993 (S2/S4) but that doesn't fit with my budget unfortunately.
So far I still love it every time I drive it. It’s my second car so every time I get in the car for a drive it’s still very special for me.

I wonder what the opinion is of the other people here.

Greetings,
Henrik

WOW 200 thou......How encouraging! Henrik....Bought my early '90 C2 Cab a little over a year ago for less than 20K knowing it had the typical fault's. Went ahead had engine pulled with 90,000mi.on it....decided to go the whole nine yard's...Clean,blast,flycut head's.Grind valve's,lesco guide's ,stem seal's."RS" Flywheel, clutch, pressure plate.Updated cross shaft.Reseal case thru bolt's.all gasket's.Ignition wire set.valve cover's.Regulator brush pack.AC hose's. Engine, tranny mount's.Primary bypass, cone filter, chip, Etc.Just had front seat's done full leather and TS Proxis put on......Yes it cost around 10K....but it is worth it to me. Had a '52MG,'54Jag XK120M roadster year's back both w/rack & pinion steering.....true sport car feeling....the Cab has that feel....going into corner's especially....my Hayabusa corner's the same way....let off gas..brake..hit apex..power out...what a rushing feeling ! The Cab is 15 year's young...and has both world's...classic 911 look and respectable power. I plan to drive it till the Boneyard beckon's....
Regard's, Jim
Thank's

Congratulations Rob

My C4 cab is a month younger than yours, has done 125k miles and has a very leaky engine which is getting tired. Before I bought it, its previous few owners lived in London so presumably it did a lot of town driving. I'm sure highway driving like you do is far less stresfull on the car, hence its longevity.

Regards
Kismet
