Default poss leak question.

Good morning.
I have noticed on two occasions now that after driving my 964 c4 and returning and parking the car up that a small stain of oil is found coming from the right hand side of the vehicle after a hour or so. The best way I can describe this is that is it coming from the edge of the engine cover and from the front of one of the slits that is there. Has anybody else experianced this or could you let me know where this could be coming from. I will be seeing if this continues and obvious get it up on a ramp if it does.
Kind regards

A 964 with an oil leak !
Seriously though, valve cover seal possibly. I've become philosophical about oil leaks on my 964. The odd drip/damp patch, a quick clean, and leave well alone.
Its a Porsche 964 thats what they do.

Yep, when Porsche designed the 964 they couldn't agree on an oil change interval so turned it into a continuous process instead. Take the engine cover (or "drip tray" in the case of my car) off and you'll be able to see where it is coming from. Personally I wouldn't put it back on until winter when it will protect the engine from salt, if you are in such a climate.

I had a problem where the yellow cap on the oil filler neck didn't screw down properly so oil was escaping past the yellow cap onto the rear tyres and bodywork. I had to have a new filler neck welded on.

Thanks guys.
The car has just come back from Autofarm after bit of work what needed redoing from a topend rebuild last year. that side of things look dry now so really i can take it that it my have occurred from putting the engine back in. Sorry i dont know a lot about these engines. What is around this area of the enginebay?

Right hand rear is possibly oil return lines which I gather are prone to leak.

Cheers.
Took the car for a spin yest and the same thing happened. literally one drip came though this slit on the engine tray before i could put some paper down. After that nothing at all. I take it these are made of steel? Can only imagine this has occurred due to the engine being taken out and put back in.
Adrian.

Right rear is also power steering pump and seals. These suckers love to leak. It's really no big deal, amorgan. It's like my wrench says (although I'm sure he's not the first). "It's not leaking, it's just marking its territory."

Brian is right - I was sure the little drips from my car (2-3/day) were oil return tubes but was actually the seal for the power-steering pump - $20 gasket when the other service was done as he had the exhaust and heat exchangers off to adjust the valves.

Morning guys.
Had car on a ramp and took drip tray off. Found a little bit of oil on the furthest outer part to the heat exchange on the right hand side. I cant see where it is dripping from above that but it is very little. What part of the engine would you think this is from or could it be the oil return pipes?
Many thanks

That is exactly where mine was leaking - onto top front part of right heat exchanger and would run off outer edge.

Hi marc. And yours turned out to be the power steering pump(this uses oil?) Mine only happens when i take the car out for a good run and when i park up. If this is the case obviously I am very pleased. Like i explained before the engine only went back in the 2 weeks ago after having the repairs done to the top end rebuild.
Cheers

No, my understanding is that it is a seal around a cam shaft that drives the power steering pump - not the actual pump itself.

Marc

edit: There is a letter in this month's 911/PW in which they mention this as a leak source too.

Before you go looking into replacing the power steering pump seal, try tightening the hose clamps on the power-steering fluid lines from the reservoir to the pump. that fixed a leak I had.
