Post Tire recommendations for Design 90 wheels

Folks,

Anyone out there got any good Tire recommendations for a standard 964 C4 running on Design 90 wheels ??? I spend most of my time on the street (although I do enjoy an occasional blast through the countryside and would hope to visit the track a couple of times a year) ??

The car is unmodified, but I am considering lowering it a little for aesthetic reasons

Any suggestions welcome - Thanks Andy

If you are asking for a make of tyre, I would suggest that Bridgestone SO3's would be a very good choice. I have had SO2's in the past and these were excellent. I guess it's down to personal choice.

If you are talking about size(!) then as you will know the standard sizes are 205/55/16 front and 225/50/16 rear. I think you can go 225/50/16 front and 245/45/16 on th back with minimal problems - although I think Adrian ha smentioned that a 5mm spacer may be required on the front (I don't know whether this is C2 AND C4 or C4 only...)

If you're really on a budget, I like my Yokohama AVS Intermediates for street use. $76 for 205/55 16 and $81 for 225/50 16 at The Tire Rack.

Dear Christer,
You should not mix things up. The Design 90 wheels on the C4 and C2 were only 6Jx16 on the front and 8Jx16 on the rear. You cannot install a 225 on a 6 inch wide wheel. You need 7Jx16 minimum. On the rear the 8JX16 can take a 245.
With the standard D90s it is better to use the recommended 205/55ZR16s on the front and 225/50ZR16s on the rear.
For which brand I found personally that the old Bridgestone SO1s were by far the best. SO2s were excellent as well except noisy. I would not bother with SO3s really.
Toyo RA1s also seem to be looking good. However any set of high quality tyres wil do. I prefer spending the extra money and purchasing the N rated tyres for my model.
Ciao,
Adrian

PS: For the record. In winter I now use 993 16 inch wheels with 15mm spacer onthe rear. For summer I use 911 Turbo, 17 inch wheels. My deign 90 wheels are gathering dust along side a Swiss only set of 944 7Jx15 phone dials with a 951 part number, manufactured for CH only in 1984.

Adrian

But it's ok to leave the 205/55's on the front and go with 245/45's on the back?

Is there any advantage in doing this (other than arguably better traction)?

Dear Christer,
This would be just for looks. If you are going to increase to 245s on the rear and nothing else, you may well find that you tend to push the front around hard corners. You will feel the front sort of skidding. It is hard to explain but you will know it when you feel it. I have been running 205/255 and I am not happy with this combination for hard work. No problem in a straight line but for hard cornering I believe 225s will be better.
The optimum tested combination for the C4 on 16 inch wheels was 225/245 at Watkins Glen,

PS: Install a 21mm rear sway bar on a C4 and see the differences.

When I had my C4 coupe with the16x6's and 8's, I ran 225x50's and 245x45's and they worked great. They really helped with the push Adrian refers to. That being said, the 225 was a bit big for the 6 inch rim as far as appearance, but it worked great! I always give up aesthetics for performance(Should see my racecar, wins races, but won't win a concours! lol) I ran 2 sets like that before selling the car with over 60 k on it. Hope that helps.

Here is the link with the specs for the Kumho Ecsta 712. I found it to be a very good all around tire and very reasonable. http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Spec.j...CSTA+Supra+712
