Will do John. as soon as I get any info on it I'll post it up on here.
cant see how the belts are tensioned only thing I can see it a big nut on the top pulley. I imagine behind all the plastic the alterator moves in slots to tighten belt but thats just a guess. is it as simple as just undoing that nut?
I start back at work Sunday/tomorrow and monday. I am trying to arrange a way to get the car up to neinmeisters on tuesday if not later in the week. I'll let the experts take a look at it. not desperate just yet cos I can use the bike for comuting.
my fingers are crossed for clutch prob or alternator.
thanks all for the advise and kind words. cheers

The belts are tensioned by shims between the two halves of the top pulleys. In other words, the two 'rims' of each pulley can be moved together (to increase tension) or apart depending on how many shims are in there.

thanks john I seem to recal thats how a beetle pulley works as well.
Now at the risk of testing you guys patience I have a rather embarasing stupid question.
Managed to get hold of a 24mm socket today (mine only went to 22)so when I got home from work tried to remove big nut to test if fan spins.
All that happens is that the first half of the pulley spins and the first belt squeeks. the second belt and pulley remain static. the nut does not seem to move tried both directions in case it was left hand thread. it just does not become loose.
What am I doing wrong? has the nut seized on the thread? Im usualy competant enough to do simple jobs like this but this car just defeats me at every turn

Guys sorry to be a royal pain in the ***. manged to get the nut off my god it was tight needed a big ,big bar. didnt have the spline tool but managed to buy one localy.
I take it I need to undo these next 3 small nuts. sorry for the daft questions but I don't want to cause any more damage than there already is. I'm in full on panic mode over this. just about to set off to work in the rain on my bike for a 12 hour night shift. will have more time to search the forum when I wake up on thursday afternoon but If this isnt the problem I need to get the car sent off to an independant.
many thanks for your help.

You don't need to undo any more bolts to check rotation of the alternator.
The shaft spins the alternator, and the fan spins on the shaft (the fan spins relative to the shaft) - ie, the fan and the alternator spin independently, at different speeds.
Thus you should be able to rotate the shaft even with the fan held stationary by the fan belt.

If you haven't already consulted a 964 expert, suggest you ring Johnny Holland at Unit Eleven in Warrington (01925-852000). He's built/rebuilt/tuned/supercharged more 911 engines than I've had hot dinners! His labour rates are very reasonable as well.

Pesty, I know exactly what you are currently going through having been there myself last year.
I went through all the checks you have with the sameresults.
The upshot was a spun big end, a cracked crank and a recon engine.
Not good.
Commiserations mate.

My!, there's a lot of shot big ends coming out of the woodwork..is this a design weakness (heaven forfend) or a fact-of-life possibility for any motor? Are there factors that make it more likely to happen?
