A good friend of mine (in fact he was with me when we ploughed through a fence last week) is interested in buying a 911 and was looking at either a 996 or late 993C4S.
However believe it or not, despite our misshap he thought my RS was amazing and is now tempted to look for a RHD one.
He called me to say that Autofarm have a Black RHD 964 RS touring for sale at £36,950. 46,000 miles full OPC history and one of only 7 UK cars.
I went along this morning to have a look at it and as I have a long relationship with Autofarm they let us take the car for a drive.
I must say although I approached the car with some sceptisism, I absolutely loved it!!!!
Although noticably slower than my own RS, (mine has 270 bhp and is 100 kgs ligher) this was gorgeous to drive, a regular 964 Carrera 2 but with RS suspension, brakes, wheels and 260bhp engine. The regular sports seats were much more comfortable than the Recaros in mine.
I have now decided to change my RS (it really is not ideal as a daily driver, but is, as originally intended, a great track car)and I was very tempted, but at £37,000 it looks like a regular 964 and I think a 993 glass roof Targa will be a better buy. (So does my girlfriend!!)

Dear George,
Porsche actually made 11 of these RS tourers. Option M002. So 7 made it to the UK. I guess the others headed south to my homeland or maybe to Japan. There were only RHD versions.
Ciao,

That may all be true, and surely if the car's one out of 11, it makes it somewhat unique. But even to Dutch standards, I would say that it's truly expensive...it's close to 60,000 Euro! It better be in superb condition. I would not buy it either!
George, let me see if I got this straight. So, one day you are happily driving along in your RS when you loose it and end off the road. Turns out the car is OK but will need a full respray, at cost of £13k. The following week you, by pure chance, drive a heavier Touring RS, fall in love with it for all the same reasons I like the Basic RS and decide to buy a 993 Targa instead.
What on earth???
Are you still getting the RS resprayed? When are you getting the 993?
I must agree with Riccardo. To go from being completely enraptured with an RS to wanting to go and buy a 993 GLASS ROOF TARGA!!!! For God's sake man, get a grip on yourself!!!
Only possible cure: lie on the road, get girlfriend to advance and reverse repeatedly over your head (you'll be glad of the lighterweight).
Your signature states 'lightweight forever' - well it clearly doesn't mean forever does it? Just think how your car feels knowing that you are sniffing around other cars...
In your case, it would be like being married to Britney Spears and dumping her for Olga Petrolivich (Latvian shotputting champion).
Tell us it is not true...?
Well I have an even worse confession to make. For some bizarre reason, over the last few days I've started to think that 996's don't look all that bad after all.
Greg, don't worry. You'll come to your senses. May take a couple of days, but then you will be all fine again. You just have too much time to think, that's all
Yep, that seems to be true. The 993 targa is based on the cab. The roofpart would be rather heavy as compared to a normal cab top, so you can expect rattles after time. It can be fixed though, at the expense of...well...$$$
It's not to say that every targa will rattle at age, but I know of some that did. It's the construction that is more sensitive to rattle and shaking than the current 996 targa.
I had been looking at a '96 Targa, and the previous owner had it fixed as it started to rattle a bit.
Oh George .. the others have said it ... clearly owning and binning an RS are seriously dangerous things to do .. one's brain is clearly at risk of sudden detonation!

I've must confess I've had that same weird feeling recently. It must be a combination of the angle of view and the colour of car?! I've noticed myself going 'wow thats a nice looking Porsche....Oh my god it's a 996!' I'll check a few out this weekend - different colours, angle of view etc. I hope it's not a slow conversion as with child no.3 due Saturday I havent got a chance of buying one!
