Post Engine Rebuild

I am contemplating an entire engine rebuild (overhaul) consisting of both top and bottom end. Any idea how much this might cost? Not sure if the quote I received is "competitive".

I had all the proper updates completed some years ago.

thanks
Charlie

Charlie,

I can see a top end rebuild for the valves, and resealing all around the case, maybe ARP/Raceware rod end bolts, but why a bottom end rebuild? As soon as you crack the case, your costs go up a bunch.

I had a distributer belt failure. Upon further inspection it appears that I might have a problem with a crankshaft. The shop may need to open the case to confirm.

Charlie;

Can you enlighten us why the crank would be bad due to a broken belt. Unless they dropped something into or on the drive gear. Did the drive gear get wiped out? I'm just curious.

chas911...I too would like to know if the shop thinks you have a crank issue due to the distributor belt failure?

I had a friend who had a broken belt and attended a few track events with it that way, catastrophic in the end - checkout my article/pics on www.porsche964.co.uk

The only issue I could see is if you have low oil pressure from trash getting into the main bearings or a rod knock from the same -or- stretched rod bolts. Like Bill said, that's where your rebuild can get a bit pricey...but certainly put in new/upgraded rod bolts if you go that far.

As for the cylinder that your secondary rotor was "stuck" on, by all means, check that one out thoroughly as it will likely be dirty/black from carbon buildup, etc....odd how a cylinder that gets fired upon when any other cylinder does gets that way? See pics.

Charlie:

If the bottom end rebuild you're talking about includes a new crankshaft for some reason, expect it to be BIG bucks. A new crank runs over $4000 for a 964. Whether they can be re-machined or not I really don't know. They may be nitrided. When I first heard about that price, I didn't believe it, so I checked it out.

How many miles are on the car leading you and/or your mechanics to think that a bottom end rebuild is needed?

I believe there are no rod bolt problems. I do have broken rockers and a dislodged timing pin. It appears that the prior rebuilder used the wrong vibration dampening parts. Also, a few bent valves. The cylinders appear to be in fine shape (finally some good news) along with the rods.

After the distributor was replaced and the car started the engine did not sound healthy. I authorized the shop to find out what other issues there might be. They could not determine the cause looking at the upper end so they opened the case.

I see that Steve @Rennsport Systems can complete a rebuild in some 35 hours. I am not sure how many hours my shop has estimated.
The car has 58k.

I've heard $4-6k for a "top-end" rebuild and around $10k for a "total" rebuild. Given that a certain Porsche dealership located in Beaverton, Oregon will sell you a Porsche remanufactured complete 964 engine (with warranty) for $8,880.23 (cost of $7,721.94 plus 15% - part #964.100.964.X), IMHO you'd be crazy to have the local mechanic rebuild your existing motor. I just spoke with the parts department of said dealership and he confirmed this price.

Do a search on this board for "rebuild" and you'll get the posts discussing this option.

It's a Porsche part that's coming from Germany. I would get a quote from a Porsche dealer in the UK or Germany that offers good prices on Porsche parts, since shipping it back and forth across the Atlantic Ocean would add to the cost significantly. Good luck!

Charlie;

Did you miss a shift? I do understand that you broke a rocker arm. Did it come from an over rev condition when you down shifted into a lower gear? Did the nose of the crank get wasted. That can be fixed by a good machine shop.
