[quote]Porsche used to produce Turbos in cab (and Targa) form, so they must have felt cab ownership and serious performance can mix.

Not to mention the limited edition America Roadster, which had turbo underpinnings. I had an opportunity to ride in a low mileage pristine example, and it was very nice in looks, feel, and performance.

Dear Bill,
I agree there is a lot of confusion. The 911 (964) Cabriolet Turbolook was also built on the 1991 MY Turbo chassis. American Roadster was the US version of same as you point out.
The RSA is a lightweight version of the C2 with a stiffer suspension but same ride height.
The RS or the Carrera Cup cars or the RSR (yes there are road legal factory built versions around) are the real teeth rattling Porsches in the 964 series.
The RSA is an excellent but expensive building block towards a nice track car because some of the work is already done. However to get it to RS standards takes quite a lot more work and a lot of money,
Ciao,

PS: There is "some" evidence that a few RSAs did have some additional welding carried out. However I have yet to actually see verifiable evidence that this work was carried out in the factory.
PSS: A RSA was recently imported into Switzerland by a chap down in Lausanne.

Here's the drum. I'm a self confess car ho and have had an RSA for over 4 yrs. During that time I've continued my ho ways and have tried to find a replacement. Still got the RSA.

Just this last weekend I took out a 92 turbo, 97 C2S, 01 996 with H&R Zucz exhaust + 18's. Here's what I found.

Turbo - lots of go but felt heavy and my stearing is better. Good car but didn't have the feel, feedback that mine does.

C2S - more refined version of my car - very good and could find it's way to my home quite easily.

996 - harsh ride, no feedback. Sorry - I thought it was the least desirable.

No other car has the feedback from the steering or the deep seat that massage your kidneys the way the RSA does. There are faster cars out there, but if you enjoy the thrill of driving through sensory input - I honestly don't think there's anything better than an RSA. I'm not sure you could get there by modifying a C2 either - something about "..this is the way it was built.."

And... that's my 2 cents worth!

Read all the emails and my conclusion is: the RS is overpriced stripped down 964! Euro version, now thats a different animal.

Not enough,
Stripped down? I'd be curious to know how you came to that conclusion based on the mentioned replies? Especially considering that most of them talk about how to UPGRADE their 964s to RS America specs....
I'm sure that you've fallen in love with all of those standard 964 features that were left out on the RSA - like those fancy armrests and door handles. And those lovely leather seats are probably oh-so supportive. Maybe yours has those spiffy 16" Design 90 wheels? Oh, and that pop-up tail is pretty cool too!
Enjoy yoursef!

High,
Erick, not enough doesn't fall for the RSA 'gimmick', U DO NOT HAVE A 'RS', U HAVE A rsa.
You just fall for the gimmick. A front sway bar, no power steering, and Rims are CHEAP changes(especially for the factory to make). You my friend would need to do 14 of the 15 listed UPGRADES above to bring your RSA to my cabriolet's specs. I thought we'd heard the last from you. Feel free to keep trying........

Gee Geo, you don't need to be so defensive. I'm certainly not criticizing your car - especially considering how much you've put into it. It sounds nothing short of awesome. However, I'm sure that no one would claim that your car was a "stripped" version of the 964 because of those performance UPGRADES. Upgrading the PERFORMANCE of a car often comes at the expense of some luxury and comfort appointments...

Personally, I would gladly sacrifice arm rests, door handles and comfortable leather seats for the M030 sport suspension, the turbo's progressively wound coil springs, larger diameter front stabilizer bar, upgraded shock absorbers, 17" wheels, and some impressive racing seats - all of which are found stock in the RS America.

You, and apparently several others, may think that it is a gimmick. But apparently the market is flooded by those who don't think so.

Considering the upgrades you've made to your 964 Cab, it is hard to imagine that you consider these performace upgrades a gimmick? You, of all people, should understand...

High,
Erick, good point....I really like the RSA too much too say any more negitive comments about it, so I'm gonna leave it at this, because if I ever desired a track machine, I gotta admit, here in the US u cant go wrong w/ a RSA. I would wait for prices to drop a little however.
Peace out(on my way to the beach for a week)

ps. one advantage, I already know of 14 upgrades that work great!
