Default Clear Nose Mask?? worth it?

I'm picking up my '92 cab next Friday, and the dealer asked if I wanted the clear nose mask put on before I take it home. considering the price, $650.00, is it worth it? Anyone done it; regretted it, recommend it?

Thoughts before I pick it up? (I tried the search and couldn't find anything)

I think it's a new 3M product. It's an adhesive clear film that goes over the paint. On the new cars I've seen it on it is almost transparent. The dealers charge $795 in this area. I'm not sure how it would look unless the car had a flawless paintjob to start. If there are any flaws they will stick out. I think this is also something you can have done after-the-fact. Any stone chips need to be taken care of... more than just a simple touch-up. I'm not sure of how it will stand up to time... This is a relatively new product.

How much does a hood re-spray cost? As Smokin said, unless it's flawless to start with, it's not worth it! $800 for a sheet of adhesive plastic is pretty expensive!!!

The neat thing about it is, if you start out with a flawless paintjob... It would (perhaps) save it. We all have a few stone chips on the front hood of our car. Something in the world of physics must apply here... Why our hoods suck in gravel... Anyway... I have faith in 3M... But this stuff just hit the streets in our area about 6 months ago. It is pricy and, like I said, you should be able to either have a dealer put it on in your own home town or even maybe order the kit and do it yourself. I think you should wait to see exactly what you are dealing with before ponying up the duckets for it.

Good Luck!

I have installed it myself on two cars but have not yet installed it on the Porsche. I have some notes somewhere on the installation process and I'll look for them. I plan to put it on the Porsche this summer.

Considering the damage that Garrett reported from his first track experience and what other people report too, I would think that some paint protection would be worthwhile. While $800 is alot, what about the ElephantRacing magnetic skin (http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/...miscel_pg6.htm & http://www.elephantracing.com/paint/paint.htm). Cheaper so maybe worthwhile?? Anyone with experience??

There has been some discussion on the race forum about these things (bra's etc.) so I'm wondering about some protection before my first DE. I have a leatherette bra (for the car, not me ) -- would that be of any use?

Any thoughts?

Thanks..........Marc

I have a clear mask on my 964. I am happy with the protection it affords although it is starting to yellow after 7 or so years. If you would like to install it yourself http://www.clearmask.com/vehicle_page.php for about $300. It has saved my hood and bumpers from most of the small stuff. I did manage to cut through the plastic when I was merging behind a dumptruck though...

hope this helps,

I'm guessing the new 3m film is what Armourfend, now Armourglove, uses, as it is warranteed for 10 years, vs 3 years for the previous film, which is what I have.

I guess the thing is... at some point... 5 years, 10 years, 15 years, etal... It will either yellow or crack or peel. It might be the best bet (If you have the smooth paint to put it over) to do it.. You'll save your paint from stone chips. After 10 years... You're likely to repaint the hood and possibly whole front end anyway. So either way, you'll strip it and start over. (If you still have the car.)

Hi,

I've revised this thread as I'm still not sure what those with experience would suggest is the best way to protect the paint work for track days and DE's.

An article here (http://www.carcareonline.com/viewarticle.aspx?art=10) suggests racer's tape combined with a bra or track skin and mirror bras is the best way to keep the paint in good shape.

I saw in this thread (https://rennlist.com/forums/993-forum/202422-times-are-a-changin-very-long.html) on the 993 board a picture whereby the owner has protected the wheel arches of his car with racer's tape (hope the author, Kim [a.k.a. Wreck Me Otter] does not mind I reproduced his picture here for 964 member's convenience).

Any suggestions on paint protection? I have a few rolls or racer's tape on order and my car came with a bra (I've never used it) but I'm wondering what "those in the know" would suggest.

Thanks.....Marc

Marc... If I were going to track my car I would...

Improvise some "Lexan" covers for my headlights, fog lights and maybe even the parking/turn signal lights. Lexan is an unbreakable polycarbonite plastic but it's easy to cut with a saber saw. These could be held on with tape or industrial velcro.

Get the magnetic track skin. It's thicker than the clear mask plastic.

Apparently, there is a new film by Llumar that people are raving about. I did a random google search on "Llumar" and read some guys experiences on forums on BMW's, Ferrari, even ricer forums.

The 3M product, is it a new one? Is it called "Ultrashield"?

I just installed this delux kit from Invinca-shield.com. I've been self installing these films for years and saving a lot of $ compared to having it professionally installed. There are a fwe tricks, but it is generally very easy if you take the right precautions. I'll be glad to share my experience with this if you need help.

Thanks for the suggestions but I decided to go with a bra - for the car, not me.

I ordered a Colgan bra and mirror bra's as well as clear 3M headlight covers and a few rolls of racer's tape. The 3M covers I'll leave on all the time and just put the bra's and tape on for the track.

Man, I've to to tell you...with regard to paint care, I would never, ever put a bra on my car. The constant vibrations of driving a absolutely guaranteed to abrade the paint underneath the bra. You'll do more harm than good with a bra.
