Default Tomorrow's D-Day

That's decision day. I've been courting a nice 964 cab in MD. I'm having it PPI'd tomorrow and based on that I'll either fly out and drive it home, or I'll a few thousand times. I've been searching for about 5 months now, knowing it would be sometime early spring before I'd actually take possession of anything. Well- seems like all that could happen 2 weeks from now.

My drive home should be great, but can you eastern folk keep the darn snow off the roads? I'll be driving back to WI, and we haven't had much snow lately. I'd like to keep it that way- thank you very much.

Wish me luck

Keep an eye on East Coast weather....it's starting to snow now.
Weathermen are forcasting anywhere from 2-12 inches....typical

Best of luck with the car.

Default Another is done!

Busted butt to get my car done for Friday and Saturday, forecast for Lime Rock area is now 10 - 16" and judging by the way it is snowing now, that seems likely!

I never thought that I would be able to say "I'll go sking and save some money".

That's right near me. Want me to take a look at it for you before you close the deal?

Hawk... If you like I could do the same for you. I live in Pasadena, MD, just south of Baltimore. I'd be more than happy to go and check out the car for you and report back. Let me know if you are interested.

** And I haven't heard of snow in the forecast here lately. I hope we're past that now.

Angry I'll most certainly post pix

the difficult part is this: Does D-day mean doom, or dream. the PPI came back with leaks in the following locations: Chain housing, Camshaft, Right Valve cover. Also, the wrench claims wet cylinders on 4&6. Might be broken stud, might be something else. Owner knew nothing about any of it.

The flip side- he regular wrench says the leaks are typical, and unless the leaks get obnoxious, he never recommends fixing them- can't say I disagree considering the cost/benefit. I was quoted 1800 by the PPI wrench.

The wet cylinders, however, could be a broken stud, in which case the PPI wrench recommended a rebuild--- approx $7000.

Everything else was tolerable- dirty carpets, some staining on the seats (silk grey on both), must replace tires before driving it home, small tear in cab top liner- not thru the exterior layer. Electrical checked out, clutch good, everything there that should be.

What would you do?

I'd have somebody drive it. Get their opinion. Price would be the final straw for me. If they're asking high teens for it, maybe, but I definitely wouldn't pay over about $19k for a car that "might" need a rebuild. There are plenty of 964s out there in much better shape mechanically and cosmetically for not much more than $22k to $25k. Good luck.

Hawk,

You didn't mention what the sale price was. I'd compare and perhaps keep shopping... Unless the owner is willing to seriously negotiate now that he knows he has problems. You might try a little "Playhouse 90", letting him know that he should disclose this to potential buyers if you fail to go through with the purchase. He may feel that since you are still interested his bet bet is to negotiate with you. In your negotiations... I would bring up the worst case scenario and the costs that may be incurred.

Good Luck! And let us know what you decide....

If you'de like for me to go by and see the car I'll do it for you. it sounds like it may be right around the corner from me... PM me or email me at rickkirby@aol.com with Porsche in the subject line...

Okay- the price is $26K, again, with 46K on the odo.

I've searched A TON of sites, looking for other cars, but they all have twice the mileage for the same price. No telling what I'll get into there either, and I could go broke on PPI fees looking at each one.

Anyone got a cherry 964 they're willing to sell me for under $25K??
