Drafty
Is this normal? What is the likely source?
On other cars, I've seen a thick plastic lining between the door panel and the metal part of the door, presumably to block such drafts...does our beloved 964 lack such a lining? Or, perhaps mine has simply developed a leak?

I am sure you will find that the plastic inner liner is torn. This is not uncommon in 964s that have had problems with windows.
The only way to fix this is to remove the speaker and try and seal things up again,

PS: One other thing to look at is the source of the airflow. Is the door sealed correctly. There is also a cap assembly on the top forward leading edge of the door, is this intact, in place.

There is also one at the top of the door as well. Sort of rectangular with trimmed curved edges. Made of hard plastic. They do come out and are easily lost. There is a TSB along the lines you have mentioned. I used a few extra bits of rubber stick on strip to solve draft problems around the front of the doors. The door seals get compressed and stay that way. This has been discussed before. If water can get in so can the airflow,

Vehicle Type:
911 Carrera (964 and 993)
911 Turbo (964 and 993)
Model Year:
As of Model Year 1989
Concern:
Air drafts in the area of the inner door opener.
Modification:
As of April 1, 1997 from VIN: 99 1VS322950
From the above-mentioned VIN a felt piece is installed in the inner door opener (Figure 1). This significantly reduces air drafts from the area of the inner door opener. The felt piece may be installed in earlier vehicles.
Repairs:
Installation of felt piece.
Disconnect the door opener rod, inner door cover and pull handle.
Lay felt piece onto the inside of the inner door opener, and mark with a pen or suitable marker (Figure 1).
Important : The pointed part of the felt piece must point forward in the driving direction.
Apply glue on the marked area of the inner door panel and install the felt piece.
Reinstall the pull handle, inner door cover, and the door opener rod.
Important : Avoid damaging the felt piece by carefully pushing the door opener rod through the slot in the felt (Figure 1, arrow).
Parts:
