Post Good "Dustless" Street Pads??

As I've recently returned from my adventures to the Midwest, and reluctantly returned to work, some of you may recall I performed a Big Red conversion...about a week before departing.

Did anyone miss me??

This conversion, and the Porterfield racing pads I have been using performed flawlessly on the various tracks I encountered (another story). BUT, now that I've returned home and removed my track wheels/tires, I realize I don't have a set of street pads for the Big Red calipers.

I have driven to work a few times with the car...within two trips my beeeeeautiful front 996 "twist" wheels now look like dookie!!

...with the rears taking a close second.

Okay, I have street pads for the rear four piston C2 calipers, but none for the Big Reds.

The street pads that were sold to me soon after purchasing my 964, about a year ago just plain suck! They fade at Autocrosses and when "testing" out my car in a nearby industrial park - to threshold brake with these pads is a joke!!

Does anybody have a recommendation for a decent set of street pads that will "do" at an Autocross and not create a lot of dust and squeeeeel??

I am quite accustomed to changing out the pads to full race pads when preparing for a weekend at the track, but for all other purposes, I need a good set of pads...for everyday use, the occasional autocross AND some reliability when I do want to veer towards the "edge".

Jeff,

Some people like the Metalmasters as a low dust pad that can also stand up to some higher performannce use. Less than $40 per axle set.

Jeff, why not look into Performance Friction? Don't squeal, little fade, if any, and are available thru Auto Zone

I was going to suggest the PF Z-rated pads, which I used on the SC - better than stock, and other good characteristics. However, I seem to recall them dusting a bit. Not as bad as stock or Pagids, though.

Christer, "dookie" means S__T...at least in my "social circle" it does.

Horst and Bill, good advice...and thanks, sorry - I have been away from the boards for quite some time, coming back from my adventures has provided a lot of things to catch up to!!

I've considered Performance Friction, absolutely forgot about the "Z" compound that they offer, I think I'm going to check into that today, you say Autozone will have them? ...for Big Reds??

THAT, I have to see.

Yes, Autozone has them, however, I am not familiar with pads to "Big Reds". In fact they did not have a PN for the C-4. I sorta extrapolated (?)- saw that the pads for the 944 S-2 and 944 Turbo had the same PN in PP catalog as the ones needed for the C-4, so ordered by that PN & got the correct pads.

Jeff:

Re the PF Z compound pads; a year or two ago I got a set of them along with new PF 90 compound pads. I was not satisfied with their slowing capacity, which felt less than cold 90s. Ever since then I've used the 90s all the time. They dust a little, and are probably a little harder on rotors, but they are not noisy.

Good advice Jim, although I've gone down that route before...they DO create A LOT of dust!

I went to Autozone yesterday to inquire about PF "Z" pads, they can special order them, but NOT for Big Red calipers.

I'm going to talk to a few of my "sources" and probably just get a factory set of pads for the Big Reds, made by Textar or Jurid and live with it.

As far as looking for performance out of the street pads I purchase, guess I'm NOT that concerned with that, more concerned with keeping my beautiful 996/Boxster "S" wheels in good shape.

...I have KILLER pads to use at track events, I'll just continue to change them out a week prior to any event...and keep the wheels clean!

I don't know if they come in your Big Red size, but the last dustless pads I used (years ago) were the Metalmasters that Bill mentioned. They seemed to have it all; low price, no dust or noise, and good slowing capacity for street use.
