Default Oil Smoke embarrasment

I went for a bit of a drive today was fun however had an issue!!

Was stuck in traffic on a hill, I tend to hold the car on with the clutch (not good I know) After a while I noticed the oil temp rising. Then a little smoke from the nearside rear wheel area. I pulled over a little embassared. Switched off the engine. I couldn't see where the smoke was coming from however it stopped after a while. I am worried that this could turn into a mare in the summer.

I then decided to take the car down to Brighton for a burn. Motorway was good. No problems there.

I understand the preveous owner had all the oil lines replaced.

What could be the issue?

Cheers

Sunil

Most probably a bit of oil leaked onto the exhaust somewhere & burnt off. Could you have over filled it with oil?

If you have the under pan on it could have run down from there when you were on a slope. I have had a couple drops come off of mine when i have one side jacked up for a few hours.

Hiya Andy

I have a Hayward & Scott system installed. Cat bypass, no muffler on the offside and a stailless steal box. So I think that there is no exhaust system for the oil to burn on ??

I have not touched the oil since getting the car.

Cheers

Yep... Ever thought of taking driver lessons? You use the parking brake to hold you on a hill and place the shift lever in neutral and release the clutch pedal. This save on your throw out bearing. Keep the parking brake until you have engaged first gear, then in a coordinated movement release the clutch and the parking simultaneously.

That will be $50. for the lesson. Paypal is fine.

Bargain really - compared to the price of a new clutch!

LOL, Cheers Monique!!!

I wonder if it was the clutch burning? But I like holding the car on the clutch. I suppose I'd better stop, I can think of better things to spend 2 grand on.

Hello mate,

Have you checked the price of a clutch plus installation lately?

Good driving habits are much cheaper but ... perhaps you have too much moolah?

You can tell from the smell whether it is clutch or oil.

You refer to the smell coming from the "nearside" rear wheel arch, is it a left or right hand drive ?

There are some oil pipes running through the right hand rear wheel arch.

I think nearside is the side by the kerb - so RHD or LHD doesn't matter. The country you are in will vary what nearside means - so in the UK, it will always be the LHS of the car.

Not entirely true. The cat bypass, the hottest part of the exhaust system, sits right behind the nearside (left) rear wheel. Any oil spilling on it will certainly generate smoke/smell pretty darn quick.

I do not have a cat, just a bypass pipe ;o).

Dave, just had a look at your website about Mellow Yellow, very interesting.

I'm going back the parents house tonight so i'll take the Poker for a spin again tonight!

Cheers

Sunil,

I realised that you had a cat bypass - not a cat - but the bypass pipe still fits in the same postion as the cat (it just doesn't have the catalytic internals) and it gets just as hot as the cat so it still is a good candidate for your burning oil smoke.

I'm pleased you liked the site. It's a work-in-progress, just like the car!!!

Regards

Dave
